Chapter 7 - Blood on the Marble

Alexander didn't dive for cover; he dove straight into the gunfire.
He threw his body laterally, knocking Elena violently away from the console just as three suppressed bursts ripped through the primary server housing, spewing sparks, smoke, and shattered silicon into the air.
Alexander hit the floor rolling. He brought the MP5 up and fired a continuous, sweeping burst across the knees of the two mercenaries on the left. The rounds found the unarmored joints beneath their tactical vests. Both men collapsed with strangled howls of pain.
Elena didn't miss a beat. As she hit the floor, she drew a concealed Glock 19 from a holster strapped to the small of her back—retrieved from beneath her maid’s apron during the vault breach.
*Bang! Bang! Bang!*
Three precisely placed rounds struck the third mercenary in the throat and face, dropping him instantly onto the diamond-plated floor.
The fourth mercenary lunged forward, leveling a combat shotgun at Elena.
Alexander sprang from the floor, wrapping his arm around the man’s throat from behind, twisting violently with all the leverage of his weight. The shotgun fired into the ceiling, obliterating a hydraulic coolant line.
A blast of freezing, pressurized liquid freon erupted from the ceiling, filling the vault with a blinding white cloud of sub-zero fog.
“Alexander!” Elena’s voice cut through the hiss of escaping gas.
Alexander finished the mercenary with a brutal knee to the spine, dropping the unconscious man to the floor. Through the blinding white fog, he saw the silhouette of Liam Vance retreating through the shattered blast door, heading back toward the estate catacombs.
“He’s running for the surface!” Alexander coughed, the freezing freon burning his lungs. “The helipad on the south lawn!”
Elena appeared at his side, her tactical composure entirely intact, reloading her Glock with a smooth, mechanical motion. “We can't let him leave this property with the backup transmitter. If he gets to altitude, he can broadcast the master override remotely!”
“The catacombs lead to the old wine cellar beneath the ballroom,” Alexander said, scooping up an assault rifle from one of the fallen contractors. “There’s a private elevator that opens directly behind the library fireplace. It’s faster than the stairs.”
They sprinted through the blast door, plunging into the narrow, brick-lined tunnels that had run beneath Blackwood Manor since the Civil War.
Water dripped from the arched ceilings, mixing with the damp moss and the lingering stench of cordite. Elena moved with ruthless efficiency, clearing corners with the lethal instincts of an apex predator, while Alexander led the way through the labyrinth he had explored as a boy.
“Your father really loved you, Alexander,” Elena said suddenly, her voice low as they moved swiftly through the gloom.
Alexander didn't break his stride. “He lied to me my whole life. He turned my wedding into a tactical combat zone.”
“He lied to keep you alive,” Elena countered, glancing back to cover their six. “Liam Vance was systematically eliminating anyone who could challenge his control over the Reid empire. Marcus knew if you were in the loop, your body language, your decisions, your reactions would give it away. Vance watched you like a hawk. You had to be completely innocent for the trap to work.”
They reached the heavy iron grate of the private elevator shaft.
Alexander ripped open the service panel, hot-wiring the manual override switch. The cables groaned, and the cage began its rapid ascent toward the main house.
Above them, the muted sound of sirens and helicopter blades chopped through the Virginia sky. The federal assault teams had arrived.
“When we reach the surface, Vance’s men will be desperate,” Alexander warned, checking the magazine of his rifle. “They’ll shoot anything that moves, including the authorities.”
Elena looked at him, her hazel eyes steady, completely devoid of fear.
“Then we don't give them the chance to shoot,” she said.
The elevator cage slammed to a halt with a heavy, reverberating thud.
The iron gate slid open.
