Chapter 14 - The Tables Turn

On the screen, smoke billowed through the concrete chamber.
One of the armed guards crumpled to the floor, disarmed and pinned by two black-clad tactical operators. The second guard threw his weapon away, his hands flying into the air as red laser sights painted his chest.
Marcus, Nathaniel’s chief of personal security, stepped into the camera’s frame, ripping the oxygen mask off his own face before gently lifting Eleanor from the wheelchair. Marcus looked directly into the camera lens, tapping his radio.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus’s deep voice boomed through the tablet speaker, filling the boardroom with crystal clarity. "The target is secure. Mrs. Eleanor Vance is safe, unharmed, and under direct escort to Vance Memorial Hospital. Both hostiles have been neutralized and detained."
The boardroom fell into a silence so profound you could hear the rain lashing the windows eighty stories above the street.
Richard Sterling slumped back into his chair, his face gray, his eyes hollow with utter despair. "My God... it’s over."
Victor stared at the screen, his breath hitching in his chest. His fingers twitched violently against the silver handle of his cane. "No... no, that’s impossible! The facility was off-grid! How did you find it?!"
Nathaniel slowly stood up. He towered over the conference table, his presence commanding, immense, and lethal.
With one smooth, contemptuous motion, Nathaniel seized the thick stack of transfer documents, ripped them cleanly in half, and let the white shreds flutter down over Victor’s head like confetti.
"You underestimated the woman I married, Victor," Nathaniel said, his voice echoing off the glass walls like thunder. "You thought she was just a pair of hands to scrub your floors. You forgot that she knows how this city was built. She knows every brick, every pipe, and every dirty secret your greed tried to bury."
Victor backed away from the table, his cane shaking against the floor. "Directors! You cannot listen to this! I still hold the charter challenge! Under Article Nine—"
"Article Nine is void," Rose interrupted, stepping up beside Nathaniel, her eyes blazing with cold triumph.
From her jacket, Rose pulled a certified blue-ribbon legal folio bearing the embossed golden seal of the State Supreme Court.
"While you were busy organizing kidnappings, Victor," Rose said, tossing the document onto the center of the table, "Nathaniel’s attorneys were not looking for an old ledger. They were filing an emergency unsealing petition with Judge Harrison. The original 1984 amendment striking the pedigree clause was never missing. It was filed under your father’s sealed personal trust, where *you* hid it forty years ago."
Rose pointed an accusing finger at Victor. "Nathaniel’s marriage to me is fully recognized under Vance Global charter. His executive powers are restored in full. And you, Victor Vance, are officially stripped of all shares, all dividends, and all titles."
"Security!" Nathaniel roared.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open. Four armed metropolitan police officers, flanked by two federal prosecutors with badges displayed, entered the room with heavy, measured steps.
The lead prosecutor, a severe woman with silver-rimmed glasses, walked directly toward Victor and Richard Sterling.

"Victor Vance, Richard Sterling," the prosecutor announced, uncurling two federal arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, corporate extortion, and the unlawful death of Thomas Miller under federal racketeering statutes. Put your hands behind your back."
