Chapter 12 - Blood and Wire

Rose didn't panic.
She looked at Nathaniel, whose hands were trembling—not from fear, but from the unbearable torture of being trapped. For the first time in his life, the billionaire whose wealth moved markets was utterly powerless. If he fought, his mother died. If he complied, his family and the woman he loved were destroyed.
Rose leaned down, picking up the tablet. She studied the live video feed with clinical, razor-sharp focus.
Growing up in the city’s poorest industrial quarter, Rose had spent five years working night shifts as a janitorial contractor for municipal infrastructure before she ever entered private domestic service. She knew the layouts of the city’s historic underground pipelines, the air exchange grids, and the private medical vaults built beneath former bank reserves.
In the corner of the video feed, behind Eleanor’s wheelchair, was an exposed brass manifold valve stamped with an embossed serial number: *W-404-B*.
Rose turned her head slightly toward Leo, who was standing quietly against the back wall. Leo caught her eye. They had developed a silent language during the long years of poverty, surviving on instinct and shared cues.
Rose tapped her finger against the side of the tablet twice, then mouthed a single syllable: *Waterworks.*
Leo’s eyes widened slightly in comprehension. He subtly slipped his hand into his jacket, pulling out a custom encrypted smartphone—a device Nathaniel’s head of cybersecurity had given him the previous day to monitor secure communications.
"We need fifteen minutes to read the documents," Rose said aloud, her voice cool and steady, diverting Victor’s attention back to her. "If Nathaniel is signing away his life’s work, our attorneys must review the liability release clauses."
Victor sneered. "You are in no position to negotiate terms, girl."
"Would you rather have executed documents that get tossed out by an appellate judge tomorrow morning for gross duress?" Rose challenged, stepping squarely between Victor and Nathaniel. "Or do you want an ironclad legal surrender? Fifteen minutes, Victor. Or tell your men to turn the valve right now and face murder charges alongside Richard Sterling."
Richard Sterling shifted nervously, leaning over to Victor. "Let them read the release, Victor. We want this untouchable in court. Fifteen minutes changes nothing. The facility is thirty miles out in the pine barrens; nobody can reach it in time."
Victor checked his platinum watch. "Twelve minutes. Not a second more. Albright, hand them the pens."
While the lawyer slid the thick stacks of legal parchment across the table, Rose stepped behind Nathaniel’s chair. She placed her hands firmly on his broad shoulders, leaning down until her lips brushed his ear.
"Nathaniel," she whispered with desperate intensity. "The serial number on the wall behind Eleanor. It’s not the pine barrens facility. It’s the old Vance sub-basement beneath the historic mint building on 4th Street. That manifold was decommissioned in 1998; only three buildings in the entire downtown district still use that specific pneumatic layout."
Nathaniel’s eyes flashed with sudden, blinding realization. The historic mint building was less than five blocks from the Vance Financial Tower.
"Leo just sent the coordinates to Marcus and our personal security team," Rose continued, her breath warm against his skin. "They are already in the tunnel network beneath the street. They are moving right now. We just need to keep Victor’s eyes in this room for ten more minutes."
Nathaniel looked up at Rose. In that moment, surrounded by hostile directors, corrupt relatives, and the shadow of death, he saw the same woman who had dived across the shattered glass terrace to catch his falling mother by the wrists.
He reached up, grasping her scarred fingers with unshakeable resolve. "You really are my guardian angel, Rose," he murmured.

"Don't lose your focus, Mr. Vance," Rose replied softly, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips. "Let’s buy our mother some time."
