Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

The silence that settled over the St. Regis was no longer uncomfortable; it was lethal.

Tiffany instinctively pulled her left hand back, pressing it against her silk dress, her eyes darting toward the exits. The five-carat diamond ring on her finger—the one she had flaunted across forty different social media stories over the last three months—suddenly felt like a band of glowing-hot iron.

“What Cayman accounts?” Tiffany whispered, terror finally cracking her shrill façade. “Julian... what did you do?”

Arthur Sterling pulled the first folder from his briefcase, slipping on his half-moon reading glasses. “Three months ago, Julian Vance opened a corporate shell entity entitled 'Vance Global Logistics Limited'—an intentional misspelling of his mother’s primary holding corporation. Using a forged digital signature of Mrs. Eleanor Vance, he secured an unauthorized private bridge loan of one million, two hundred thousand dollars from a high-interest commercial lender in Zurich.”

The guests gasped in unison. Several of Julian’s closest friends hastily put down their drinks and quietly began sliding away from their tables, eager to distance themselves from a felony in progress.

“He didn't stop there,” Arthur continued in his dry, measured legal cadence. “He used seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars of that embezzled loan to purchase the Harry Winston diamond ring currently on Miss Montgomery’s finger. The remaining funds were deposited into an offshore account to cover the down payment on a leased private jet that was scheduled to fly the couple to Bora Bora tomorrow morning.”

“Julian...” Eleanor said, her voice shaking slightly, not with sorrow, but with the quiet fury of a betrayed matriarch. “Did you honestly think I wouldn't notice a seven-figure anomaly in the European subsidiary records? Did you truly believe your old mother was so senile that she wouldn't trace the wire transfers back to your IP address?”

Julian fell to his knees on the marble floor, heedless of the cake frosting and shattered crystal digging into his trousers. “Mom! I had to! Tiffany’s friends were all marrying tech founders and hedge fund managers! They were looking down on me! They said I was just a trust fund baby living on an allowance! I had to show them I was a player! I was going to pay it back! I swear to God, Mom, I was going to pay it back with my next dividend!”

“There are no more dividends, Julian,” Arthur Sterling said, looking down at the groveling groom. “Because you used Vance Global intellectual property to secure a fraudulent loan, the company has declared you an adverse hostile agent. All personal accounts bearing your name have been placed under administrative hold pending the criminal investigation.”

“No!” Tiffany screamed, lunging toward Arthur. “You can't freeze that money! Julian owes my father three hundred thousand dollars! We have vendors to pay! The band alone costs fifty thousand!”

The lead NYPD detective stepped forward, his leather boots crunching against the broken glass. “Ma'am, step back. Miss Montgomery, I advise you to remain silent. If you are in possession of goods purchased with proceeds from commercial wire fraud, you are currently an accessory after the fact.”

Tiffany froze, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. She looked at her parents. Richard Montgomery had buried his face in his hands, softly weeping in total humiliation. Her mother Cynthia was frantically trying to shove four silver salt shakers into her designer handbag, hoping no one would notice her petty theft.

Tiffany looked down at Julian, who was literally crawling toward Eleanor’s feet, clutching at the hem of her frosting-stained Valentino gown.

“Mom! Please! Don’t let them arrest me! I’m your son! I’m your only baby!” Julian sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the cake icing that had somehow transferred to his own face. “Tell them it was a mistake! Tell them you gave me permission!”

Eleanor looked down at him. She didn't kick him away. She simply took one step back, letting the hem of her dress slip from his trembling fingers.

“A mistake is spilling wine on a tablecloth, Julian,” Eleanor whispered. “What you committed was treason against the woman who gave you life.”
