Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Grand Ballroom

“Is that true?!” Julian screamed, his voice cracking into an ugly, prepubescent shriek as he lunged toward Richard Montgomery. “You told me your family owned three commercial shipping ports! You told me your portfolio was worth eighty million!”

Richard Montgomery wiped sweat from his receding hairline with a trembling napkin. “We had liquidity issues, Julian! You said your mother’s trust had endless cash flow! You promised us a twenty-million-dollar infusion into the Montgomery logistics firm the moment the marriage certificate was signed!”

“You used me?!” Julian roared, his face turning an apoplectic shade of crimson.

“*You* used *her*!” Tiffany screamed right back at Julian, her diamond-encrusted veil tearing free from her hair as she stepped violently into his personal space. “You told me you were the sole heir to the Vance empire! You told me your mother was just a figurehead who spent all her time at charity galas! You’re a fraud! You’re a broke, pathetic little boy playing dress-up in his mommy’s clothes!”

“I am the President of Vance Acquisitions!” Julian yelled back, his fists clenched, spit flying from his lips.

“You *were* the Vice President of Regional Outreach,” Eleanor corrected him, her voice slicing through their pathetic screaming match with surgical precision. “A ceremonial title I created to keep you from causing trouble in actual board meetings. A position that carries a salary of precisely zero dollars as of midnight tonight.”

Julian spun back to his mother, his knees visibly shaking. “Mom... please. Please don't do this. Look around! Everyone is watching! The Van Horns are here! The Astors are here! Think about the family name!”

“The Vance name was built on integrity, discipline, and blood,” Eleanor whispered. “You dragged that name through the dirt the second you brought this nest of parasites into my life. And unlike you, Julian, I don’t care about the whispers of cowards.”

From the back of the room, the heavy double doors swung open once again.

This time, it wasn't the hotel staff.

Two men dressed in charcoal Savile Row suits entered, flanking a tall, silver-haired gentleman holding a battered leather briefcase. Behind them walked three uniformed officers from the New York Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.

The silver-haired man was Arthur Sterling. He didn't look at Julian. He didn't look at Tiffany. He walked straight up to Eleanor, stopped at the base of the dais, and inclined his head.

“Good evening, Eleanor,” Arthur said calmly. “The court injunctions have been signed by the duty judge. The asset freeze went into effect at seven-fifteen PM.”

Julian’s eyes bulged. “Arthur? What injunctions? What asset freeze? What are you doing with the police?!”

Arthur Sterling turned slowly to face the young man he had watched grow up. There was no hatred in the old lawyer’s eyes—only a profound, withering disgust.

“Julian,” Arthur said, opening his briefcase to reveal three thick stacks of red-labeled folders. “Your mother gave you dozens of chances to come clean about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. But you couldn’t resist the five-carat cushion-cut diamond on your bride’s finger, could you?”

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. His entire body went rigid.
