Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Gold Coast

The basement of *Sartoria D’Oro* smelled not of lavender water, wool felt, or pressing steam, but of industrial acetone, cold steel, and fresh copper.

Elena followed Vincent down a narrow flight of concrete stairs, her back pressed against the damp wall, her finger resting rigidly along the frame of the Glock exactly as Vincent had instructed. Every instinct in her body screamed at her to turn back, to run through the rain toward the clinic where Maya lay sleeping, but the cold reality of the city held her in place: running meant dying in an alley. Her only path back to her child lay directly through the monsters ahead.

At the base of the stairs, a heavy soundproof door stood ajar by two inches. A thin sliver of stark, fluorescent white light cut across the blood-spattered floor.

Vincent signaled with two fingers. Marco took the left flank; Vincent took the right.

With a smooth, synchronized motion, they kicked the door wide and cleared the threshold.

"Nobody move!" Marco bellowed.

The room was not a basement; it was a state-of-the-art pharmacological fabrication laboratory disguised beneath a tailoring shop. Stainless steel tables held multi-channel pipettes, digital chromatography columns, and pressurized nitrogen tanks. Along the far wall hung twenty rolls of bespoke wool—each bearing the seal of elite Italian mills—flanked by rows of vacuum-molding machines.

In the center of the room, a man in a white lab coat over an expensive charcoal vest spun around in terror.

It wasn't Julian Rossi.

It was Alberto Rossi—the eighty-year-old master tailor. His face was covered in fresh lacerations, his right eye swollen shut, his hands bound to an iron support column with industrial zip-ties.

Slumped across a nearby examination table was the body of another man, dressed in tactical black, his skull fractured by a blunt instrument.

"Vincent...?" Alberto croaked through cracked, bloody lips. Tears carved clean lines through the grime on the old man's cheeks. "Vincent, forgive me... Holy Mother of God, forgive me..."

Vincent lowered his weapon slightly, his breathing rattling in his throat as another spasm twisted his face. "Alberto. Where is your nephew?"

"He... he took everything," the old man wept, shivering uncontrollably. "Three days ago. Julian came with four men... men from the Valenti family. They threatened to kill my grandchildren if I didn't let them use the basting presses. They forced me to stitch those abominations into your coats, Vincent! I had to! They stood over me with guns!"

Elena stepped forward, her eyes scanning the stainless-steel prep tables.

Glass vials lay shattered across the floor. Centrifuge tubes were empty. The chemical refrigeration unit stood wide open, its interior shelves stripped bare of every compound, every reagent, and every synthesized vial.

"The antidote," Vincent rasped, stumbling against a stainless-steel table, his knuckles turning white as he fought to stay upright. "Where is the reversing agent, Alberto?!"

"Julian took it," Alberto sobbed. "Ten minutes ago! The tracking monitor on his console started flashing yellow—he knew the suit's beacon had stopped moving at the hotel! He knew the hit had failed!"

Elena rushed to the main computer terminal. The screen was still active, displaying a live telemetry grid of downtown Chicago.

"He didn't just take the antidote," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of cold terror as her eyes deciphered the data streaming across the monitor. "He was monitoring more than just your suit, Mr. Moretti."

Vincent dragged himself to her side, leaning heavily on the table. "What are you looking at?"

"The network," Elena whispered, her blood freezing in her veins. "There are three active GPS markers on this screen. One is your suit. The second is Julian Rossi's vehicle, heading south toward the Calumet River."

She stopped. A suffocating, paralyzing horror gripped her throat.

"And the third?" Vincent demanded.

Elena couldn't breathe. Her trembling finger pointed to the third blinking red icon, pulsing steadily over a detailed street map of the Pilsen district.

*St. Jude Children’s Pulmonary Clinic – 18th Street.*

Beside the marker, a live dispatch window displayed a series of encrypted text transmissions sent four minutes ago:

*TARGET ASSET IDENTIFIED: MAYA RAMOS. CLINIC SECURITY COMPROMISED. EXTRACTION TEAM IN TRANSIT. SECURE THE CHILD TO NEUTRALIZE THE SEAMSTRESS.*

"No," Elena screamed, the sound tearing from the deepest, most primal core of her soul. "NO!"

She dropped the Glock onto the table, spun around, and clawed at Vincent’s cashmere sweater with both hands, shaking the towering mafia boss with a desperate, wild fury that shocked even Marco.

"YOU SAID THEY WOULDN'T TOUCH HER!" Elena shrieked, tears blinding her vision. "YOU SWORE IT! THEY HAVE MY DAUGHTER! THEY'RE GOING TO KILL MY BABY!"

Vincent didn't strike her away. Despite the agony ravaging his organs, despite the poison slowly shutting down his heart, he caught her wrists in his massive, scarred hands. His grip was not violent; it was an anchor in a raging sea.

"Look at me, Elena," Vincent commanded, his voice deep, gravelly, and unshakeable. "LOOK AT ME!"

Elena choked on a sob, her chest heaving, her eyes locking onto his bloodshot, lethal gaze.

"They do not want to kill her," Vincent said, every syllable hammered out with absolute certainty. "They want leverage. If they wanted her dead, they wouldn't waste four men to extract her. Julian knows I am still breathing. He knows Luca failed. He is taking your child to the secondary extraction point to force an exchange: my life for your daughter's."

Vincent turned his head toward Marco, his eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage.

"Call the family," Vincent ordered. "Every soldier on the South Side. Every crew from Bridgeport to the docks. Tell them the Moretti war has begun. And tell them if a single hair on that little girl's head is harmed... I will burn the entire city of Chicago to the waterline."
