Chapter 6 - The Mask Falls

Evelyn Sterling did not become the reigning dowager of Manhattan society by surrendering easily. Seeing her son huddled like a broken child against the baseboard, her panic morphed into a venomous, desperate fury.

She lunged forward, ignoring the security guard who placed a firm, restraining hand on her shoulder.

"You arrogant bastard!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice stripping away every veneer of Park Avenue refinement, revealing the raw, gutter-born viciousness underneath. "You think you can come here and rewrite our lives? That girl was nothing! A penniless, sniveling nobody working in a community art center! Julian gave her a name! Julian gave her a life in Alpine! She owes us everything!"

Arthur Montgomery stopped. He did not turn around immediately. He let her words hang in the sterile air, let them condemn her more thoroughly than any prosecutor ever could.

When Arthur finally turned, his expression was utterly devoid of human warmth. It was the face of an emperor deciding the fate of a conquered province.

"She owes you nothing, Evelyn," Arthur said evenly. "In fact, your entire lifestyle for the past four years has been funded by the trust fund her maternal grandmother established."

Julian’s head snapped up from the floor. "What...?"

Arthur smiled—a cold, terrifying baring of teeth. "Did you really think I didn't know who was behind Blackwood, Croft & Sterling? Clara’s family—the Vance estate—held the minority partnership in that firm. When you married Elena, Julian, you thought she was an orphan with an ordinary name. You didn't realize that 'Vance' wasn't an assigned foster name. It was the name left on the blanket she was wrapped in when she was taken."

Arthur walked slowly back toward Evelyn, each step measured and deliberate.

"Julian’s father knew. Before he died six years ago, old Richard Sterling discovered the link through the firm's confidential files. He knew that one day, Genevieve Montgomery would be found. And he knew that whoever was married to her would control the largest convergence of industrial wealth in American history."

Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her throat.

"Your late husband set this trap years ago, didn't he, Evelyn?" Arthur murmured, his eyes piercing through her facade. "He steered Julian toward the art gallery where Elena was working. He orchestrated the 'accidental' meeting in Soho. You spent four years grooming my daughter to be an obedient, self-doubting wife, waiting for the day my estate lawyers finally matched her DNA so you could harvest her inheritance."

Julian looked at his mother, genuine horror breaking through his own selfish haze. "Mother... Father told you? You knew before I even met her?!"

Evelyn’s face twisted in panic. "Julian, be quiet! Don't listen to him!"

"She knew, Julian," Arthur said with ruthless clarity. "And she let you run your hedge fund into the ground because she knew the Montgomery billions would bail you out anyway. She used you as her pawn, just as you used Elena."

"You lying monster!" Evelyn screamed, her face flushed crimson, her manicured nails digging into her designer handbag. "I built this family! I preserved our status! Julian is the father of that child! You cannot separate a father from his newborn! The family courts will grant him visitation, they will grant him joint custody, and you will pay every single dime of child support to the Sterling estate!"

Arthur chuckled. It was a sound so cold it seemed to drop the temperature in the hallway by ten degrees.

"A father?" Arthur asked. "A father who refused to come home while his wife’s placenta ruptured? A father who explicitly stated on a recorded phone line—which I have already subpoenaed—that his mother comes first?"

Arthur leaned down until his eyes were level with Evelyn’s.

"In forty-eight hours, Julian will be processed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. A man awaiting trial for twenty-four counts of federal fraud does not get custody. A man who abandoned his laboring wife does not get visitation. And as for you, Evelyn..."

Arthur straightened up, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt.

"The mortgage on the Alpine mansion was purchased by Montgomery Capital at 9:00 PM tonight. By noon tomorrow, private sheriffs will be clearing your belongings onto the curb. The Sterling name is dead. Your social circle will treat you like a leper. You will spend the remainder of your miserable, shallow life watching your son sit in a federal penitentiary from a rented one-bedroom apartment in Queens."

"You can't do this!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice breaking into a hysterical sob. "You can't do this to me!"

"I already have," Arthur replied.

He turned to his lead security officer. "Remove them from the floor. If either of them attempts to approach Room 402 or the recovery wing, have the hospital security detain them for criminal trespass."

"Understood, Mr. Montgomery."

Two burly guards stepped forward, gripping Julian by his tuxedo arms and hoisting him roughly to his feet. Julian didn't fight. His legs were like jelly, his spirit completely crushed. He looked back at Arthur with hollow, pleading eyes, but Arthur didn't spare him a second glance.

"Julian! Do something!" Evelyn screamed as another guard firmly escorted her toward the elevators. "Julian!"

The heavy steel elevator doors opened with a soft chime. The guards pushed Julian and Evelyn inside. As the doors slowly slid shut, Julian caught one last glimpse of Arthur Montgomery—standing tall, unmovable as a mountain, a guardian titan protecting the family Julian had so foolishly discarded.

The doors clicked shut.

Silence returned to the corridor.

Arthur took a deep breath, smoothing down his vest. He turned and walked toward the neonatal unit, where the faint, miraculous cry of a newborn baby was calling to him through the quiet night.
