Chapter 4 - Under the Knife

The air outside Operating Room 4 smelled of ozone, antiseptic, and iron. Arthur Montgomery paced the length of the corridor, his boots clicking with rhythmic, predatory precision against the linoleum.
His coat was gone, draped over a waiting room chair. His white shirt was rumpled, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the faded ink of an old naval tattoo from his youth. In his hand, he held a black leather tablet that Sean Vance had delivered just eight minutes prior.
On the screen was the complete financial autopsies of Julian Sterling and Evelyn Sterling.
It was worse than Arthur had imagined.
Julian’s supposedly brilliant hedge fund, *Sterling Crest Capital*, was an empty facade. Three months ago, a disastrous leveraged short position on Japanese bonds had wiped out their liquidity. Julian was facing a margin call of sixty-five million dollars from private creditors—creditors linked to high-interest predatory syndicates in Jersey City.
The Alpine estate was mortgaged to the hilt. Evelyn’s jewelry was insured, but several major pieces had already been discreetly swapped for high-end synthetic replicas to pay off her personal credit lines.
They were drowning. They were weeks away from public bankruptcy and federal fraud indictments.
And then, five weeks ago, the letter from Blackwood & Croft had arrived.
Arthur’s jaw tightened as he scrolled through the surveillance logs his intelligence team had pulled from the Alpine neighborhood gate cameras. Julian had personally signed for the certified courier package from the law firm. He had opened it. He had recognized the Montgomery crest.
Instead of rejoicing that his wife was the long-lost daughter of a multi-billionaire, Julian had seen an escape hatch for his own greed. But he knew that if Elena discovered her lineage, Arthur Montgomery’s army of forensic accountants would immediately examine her husband’s affairs. Arthur would never let Julian touch a single cent of the trust. Julian would be cast aside, exposed as a fraud.
So, Julian and Evelyn had conspired. They would keep Elena isolated. They would convince her that her pregnancy was difficult, that she was mentally unstable from prenatal depression. They would have her sign an irrevocable conservatorship trust immediately after giving birth, granting Julian total legal and financial authority over her person and estate.
Once Julian controlled her legal identity, he could step forward to Montgomery Global as the conservator of Arthur’s incapacitated daughter, claiming billions in her name to settle his debts.
"You miserable, crawling worms," Arthur snarled beneath his breath, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the tablet.
The sharp hiss of pneumatic doors interrupted his thoughts.
Dr. Vance, the chief of pediatric surgery, stepped out into the hallway. His surgical cap was soaked with sweat, his paper mask pulled down below his chin. His expression was grim, exhausted, but alive with a fierce professional pride.
Arthur was in front of the doctor in two strides. For all his billions, for all his power, Arthur was just a terrified father standing before a man in green scrubs.
"Tell me," Arthur demanded, his voice cracking slightly.
"We almost lost them both, Mr. Montgomery," Dr. Vance said, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "The placental abruption was severe. There was massive internal hemorrhaging. If you had arrived at that house ten minutes later... she would have bled to death on the floor, and the infant would have suffered catastrophic hypoxic brain damage."
Arthur closed his eyes. A silent, agonizing tremor racked his massive frame. He swallowed hard, forcing his eyes open again. "And now?"
"We performed an emergency Cesarean," Dr. Vance said, a faint, tired smile finally breaking through his exhaustion. "We stabilized the bleeding. We had to administer four units of O-negative, but her vitals are steadying. She’s being transferred to the intensive recovery suite."
"And the baby?" Arthur whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"A girl," the doctor replied warmly. "Six pounds, four ounces. Her APGAR score was low at delivery, but her lungs are clear now. She’s in the neonatal warming incubator. She’s a fighter, Arthur. Just like her mother."
Arthur let out a long, ragged exhale that sounded like a sob. He reached out and grabbed Dr. Vance’s shoulder, squeezing it with immense gratitude. "Thank you, David. Whatever this hospital needs—a new wing, an endowment, new research labs—consider it done."
"Go see your granddaughter, Arthur," Dr. Vance said softly. "She’s in Room 402."
Before Arthur could take a step toward the neonatal ward, the heavy security doors at the far end of the corridor banged open.
The sharp, frantic click of high heels echoed off the walls, followed by the heavy, hurried footsteps of a man running out of breath.
Arthur turned slowly.
Julian Sterling hurried down the hall, his tuxedo jacket flapping open, his hair disheveled, his face glistening with a sheen of cold sweat. Trailing just behind him was Evelyn Sterling, clutching her designer clutch like a shield, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup, her eyes darting nervously between the armed private security guards flanking the corridor.
Julian stopped ten feet away from Arthur. He looked at the blood on Arthur’s cuffs, and a visible shudder passed through his body.
"Mr. Montgomery..." Julian began, his voice shaking, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Thank God you were there. I... we rushed here as fast as we could! The traffic from the city was impossible—"
Arthur didn't say a word.
He didn't scream. He didn't curse.
He simply stepped forward, closing the distance between them with the terrifying grace of an apex predator.

Before Julian could finish his sentence, Arthur’s right hand shot out like an iron vise, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his silk tuxedo and slamming him backward against the concrete wall with enough force to knock the breath entirely out of his lungs.
