Chapter 1 - The Fall on Cold Marble

The diamond chandelier hanging over the grand entrance hall of the Moretti estate shook with a violent tremor as a human body crashed through the air.

The engagement party was supposed to be the coronation of a new queen in Chicago’s darkest empire.

Hundreds of guests in bespoke tuxedos and designer silk gowns held crystal flutes of champagne beneath the vaulted gold-leaf ceiling.

Don Vincent Moretti, the undisputed ruler of the city's waterfront and shadows, stood near the top landing of the curved marble staircase.

His fiancée, Chloe Vance, looked radiant in an ivory dress sewn with pearls, standing inches from his chest.

Nobody heard the muffled argument that preceded the impact over the smooth swell of the string quartet.

Nobody saw the calculated, vicious malice that contorted Chloe’s painted lips just before her hands flew outward.

She planted both palms flat against Vincent’s broad chest and pushed with every ounce of leverage her body could muster.

Vincent, caught completely off-guard by the woman he had promised to protect with his life, lost his footing on the polished stone.

His heavy frame tilted backward over the abyss of the grand foyer.

His calloused hand lunged instinctively toward the ornate wrought-iron balustrade, but his fingers slipped off the slick metal.

He fell backward through thirty feet of empty air before his spine collided with the sharp edge of the mid-landing.

The sound of his skull striking the white Carrara marble cracked through the ballroom like a gunshot.

His limp body rolled violently down the remaining twelve steps, coming to a dead stop on the cold floor below.

A crimson pool immediately began blooming beneath his dark hair, staining the polished stone.

For five agonizing seconds, absolute silence swallowed the three hundred members of the syndicate.

The chamber orchestra stopped playing midway through a waltz, their bows hovering in frozen terror.

Then, from the service corridor near the kitchen, a young housemaid dropped her tray of crystal flutes.

Elena was only twenty-three, working two jobs to pay for her younger brother’s leukemia treatments.

She did not think about mafia politics, street wars, or the lethal danger of stepping into Don Moretti’s space.

She saw only a dying man choking on his own blood while hundreds of frozen cowards stared.

Elena sprinted across the polished floor, falling to her knees beside Vincent’s motionless body.

Her hands trembled as she pressed two fingers against his carotid artery to check for a pulse.

His breathing was ragged, wet, and dangerously shallow.

“Somebody call an ambulance right now!” Elena screamed into the frozen crowd.

“He’s losing blood and his airway is compromised!” she shouted, pressing her clean cotton apron against the wound behind his ear.

Before anyone could dial, footsteps thundered down the staircase in a furious, theatrical rush.

Chloe Vance descended the stairs with tears already streaming down her powdered cheeks.

She did not drop down to comfort her dying fiancé.

Instead, her eyes locked onto Elena with feral, calculated hatred.

Chloe seized Elena by the collar of her black uniform and hauled her backward with terrifying force.

Elena stumbled, and Chloe violently hurled her against the solid brass railing of the lower balustrade.

The young maid’s shoulder dislocated with a sickening pop, and her temple clipped the sharp edge of a brass post.

A thin river of scarlet trickled down Elena’s cheek as she collapsed onto the floor, clutching her shattered arm.

Before Elena could draw breath to defend herself, Chloe turned toward the stunned crowd with outstretched hands.

Her voice was a piercing shriek designed to obliterate any room for reason or investigation.

“SHE TRIED TO KILL HIM!” Chloe shrieked, pointing an accusatory diamond-clad finger at the bleeding maid.

“The maid pushed him from behind when he stopped to adjust his cufflink!” Chloe wailed, clutching her chest.

“I saw her do it with my own eyes! Get this assassin arrested before she finishes him off!” Chloe screamed to the armed guards.

The ballroom erupted into instant pandemonium as syndicate capos reached under their jackets for concealed pistols.

From the edge of the perimeter, two imposing security guards rushed forward with their weapons drawn.

One guard pinned Elena to the floor with a combat boot pressed between her shoulder blades.

The other guard yanked her good arm backward, twisting her wrist until she screamed in agony.

“I swear on my mother’s soul, I didn't touch him!” Elena pleaded, tears mixing with the blood on her face.

“I was carrying water from the pantry! I only ran to help him breathe!” she cried out to the stone-faced men.

Her desperate voice was completely drowned out by the frantic whispers of the aristocratic guests.

Above them on the lower steps, Chloe pressed a trembling hand against her mouth, feigning a breakdown.

She had orchestrated the crime of the decade in front of hundreds of high-ranking witnesses.

She had a helpless victim bleeding on the floor, ready to take the blame for the Don's execution.

And she had her handpicked guards ready to drag the scapegoat into a basement where she would never speak again.

What Chloe did not know was that someone small had been hiding behind the velvet curtains on the mezzanine.

A nine-year-old girl in a pale pink dress had watched the entire murder attempt from five feet away.

Lily Moretti was Vincent’s only child, the light of his ruthless life, and the secret heir to his empire.

Her small body was shaking with fury and terror, but her hands held a smartphone locked against her chest.

When Lily saw the guards roughly dragging Elena toward the service exit, she bolted from the shadows.

She sprinted down the marble steps, her patent leather shoes slapping loudly against the bloody stone.

“STOP RIGHT NOW!” Lily’s childish voice cut through the chaos like a laser.

“I RECORDED EVERYTHING!” the little girl shouted, holding the glowing screen high into the air.
