Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom Reckoning

The panic inside the boardroom spread like wildfire. Board members who had spent years nodding along with Robert Miller’s high-handed management now looked at the general manager as if he were a biohazard.
Harold Finch stood up, slamming his fists onto the table. "Robert! What have you done?! You fired the owner of the dirt we sit on without verifying a single fact?! You allowed a member to physically assault a man on the veranda?!"
"Harold, please!" Robert cried, his collar unbuttoned, sweat soaking through his Italian linen blazer. "How could I have known?! He applied through the standard seasonal temp agency! He provided a tax ID under the name James Carter! There are ten thousand James Carters in this country!"
"And only one who owns the land under your feet, Robert," David Sterling remarked, checking his platinum wristwatch. "It is currently 9:28 AM. At 10:00 AM, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department will arrive to execute the preliminary order of padlocking on all club facilities."
"No! You can’t do that!" Robert gasped, turning to James. "Mr. Carter, there are wedding receptions booked! We have the Southern Amateur Championship qualifying rounds scheduled for next weekend! This will cost the club tens of millions in damages!"
"Correction, Robert," James said calmly, walking toward the grand window that overlooked the eighteenth green. "It will cost *the syndicate* tens of millions. It will cost me nothing. The land will simply revert to private conservation trust status, as my father originally intended before he allowed this monument to vanity to be constructed."
"Wait... Mr. Carter, please!" Harold Finch hurried over, his hands open in desperate supplication. "The board had no knowledge of Robert’s behavior! We had no idea he was running this club with such total disregard for employee safety and basic human decency! If this is about culture, we can fix it! We will terminate Robert immediately! We will strip the Vance family of their lifetime membership without refund!"
Victoria looked up sharply from the floor where she was leaning against the credenza, her eyes bloodshot. "Harold?! You can't strip my membership! My family donated the funds for the entire swimming complex!"
"Shut your mouth, Victoria!" Finch roared, turning on her with a ferocity that made her recoil. "Your family is currently insolvent! Your husband’s empire is being dismantled as we speak! You have brought ruin upon every single person in this room with your grotesque, unbridled arrogance!"
James watched the vultures turn on one another. It was a spectacle as old as time: when the foundation of privilege cracks, the elite do not band together—they devour each other to stay afloat.
"Firing Robert is not enough, Mr. Finch," James stated, turning back toward the room. "Over the past three weeks, I did not merely observe Mrs. Vance’s behavior. I audited your books."
Robert Miller went completely rigid. All the air left his lungs.
James gestured toward David, who pulled a second, thinner red folder from his briefcase.
"For four years," James continued, his voice steady, rhythmic, and devastating, "Robert has been pocketing kickbacks from commercial turf suppliers, diverting the club's employee pension reserve into an offshore account in the Caymans, and accepting cash bribes from prospective members to leapfrog the five-year waiting list. Total misappropriated funds: four point two million dollars."
Robert slumped back, his mouth opening and closing like a fish on dry land. "That's... that's a lie... you can't prove that..."
"I don't need to prove it in the newspapers, Robert," David Sterling interjected smoothly. "I delivered the full forensic audit to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina twenty minutes before we walked into this room. Special agents are likely already in the clubhouse parking lot."

As if on cue, the distant wail of multiple sirens echoed from the long, tree-lined driveway of Whispering Pines.
