Chapter 8 - The Emergency Family Summit

Word spread through Boston high society with the speed of wildfire. The once-untouchable Bennett family had imploded overnight.
At 4:00 PM, Judge Sterling convened an emergency preliminary hearing in Courtroom 4A of the Suffolk County Superior Courthouse. Because of the high-profile nature of the family and the sensational allegations, the gallery was packed with reporters, corporate board members, and curious spectators.
Richard Bennett was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and leg irons. The proud, arrogant patriarch who had dominated corporate boardrooms for three decades looked entirely destroyed. His bespoke suit had been replaced by a wrinkled county prisoner jumpsuit; his posture was hunched, his eyes darting frantically across the crowded room until they landed on Olivia, who sat calmly beside Vance Keller at the petitioner's table.
Margaret was led in next, sobbing hysterically, hiding her face behind her shackled hands.
“Quiet in the gallery!” the bailiff called out as Judge Sterling, an imposing woman with silver hair and an expression of pure, unyielding severity, took the bench.
“We are here to review emergency petitions regarding the estate of Arthur Bennett and consider bail modifications for defendants Richard and Margaret Bennett,” Judge Sterling began, adjusting her spectacles. “Mr. Keller, you may present your motions.”
Vance Keller rose smoothly to his feet. “Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit A: the complete, sworn confession of Gregory Barnes, along with time-stamped video surveillance demonstrating that defendant Margaret Bennett knowingly commissioned the forgery of a warranty deed for the property known as Penthouse 8B.”
Richard’s defense attorney, a sweating private practitioner hired through what little personal cash Richard had left, stood up immediately. “Objection, Your Honor! This is an estate dispute that belongs in civil mediation! My clients are respected pillars of this community—”
“Sit down, counsel,” Judge Sterling snapped, cutting him off with the sharpness of a guillotine. “I have reviewed the preliminary evidence submitted by the District Attorney’s office, including the forensic surveillance footage recovered from Arthur Bennett’s hospice residence on November 14th.”
The entire courtroom erupted into excited whispers.
Richard’s head sank toward the mahogany table. Margaret let out a pathetic, strangled wail.
“The conduct depicted in that video,” Judge Sterling continued, her voice trembling with righteous fury, “is an affront to human decency. The defendants demonstrated a callous, sociopathic disregard for the life of Arthur Bennett in a predatory effort to seize control of assets that were never theirs. Furthermore, the State Police have confirmed that defendant Chloe Bennett utilized fraudulent documentation to secure illicit loans from an organized criminal syndicate, endangering the life of the legitimate property owner, Olivia Bennett.”
Judge Sterling brought her gavel down with a thunderous *CRACK*.
“Bail is denied for both defendants. Richard Bennett and Margaret Bennett shall remain remanded in custody pending their formal arraignment on charges of first-degree attempted murder, grand larceny by extortion, and criminal conspiracy. Next matter!”
Richard suddenly lurched against his handcuffs, screaming across the aisle toward Olivia.
“You ungrateful monster!” Richard howled, spit flying from his lips as two court officers wrestled him backward. “I raised you! I gave you your education! You are destroying your own blood for an apartment!”
Olivia slowly stood up from the petitioner’s table. She smoothed the lapels of her dark blazer, walked toward the railing that separated the gallery from the well of the court, and looked her father dead in the eye.
“You didn't raise me, Richard,” Olivia said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom. “Grandpa raised me. You were just a tenant living off his hard work. And today, your lease is officially expired.”

Richard collapsed backward into the grip of the officers, completely broken, as they dragged him through the heavy holding cell doors.
