Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

Arthur Vance jerked his head up, hope flaring like a dying match in his hollow eyes. "Anything, Eleanor! Anything! Name it!"
Eleanor walked slowly around the stone table, her fingers trailing lightly over the blooming lavender buds.
"The choice is simple, Arthur," Eleanor said, looking out toward the vast blue horizon of the Pacific Ocean. "One of you goes to federal prison. The other walks away."
The courtyard went deathly silent.
The ocean breeze rustled the leaves of the olive trees, but between the three human beings, not a single breath was drawn.
Tiffany’s heart stopped. She looked at Eleanor, then turned her wide, terrified eyes toward her father. "What...?"
"Julian Drake has structured the evidence meticulously," Eleanor explained, her tone devoid of emotion. "The wire transfers were routed through two distinct entities. One entity was controlled exclusively by you, Arthur. The other was an offshore holding corporation registered in the Cook Islands, where every fraudulent transaction bears Tiffany's legal signature and biometric authorization."
Eleanor turned back to face them.
"I have spoken directly with the United States Attorney for the Central District of California. If Arthur Vance signs a full, unconditional confession taking sole responsibility for the entire embezzlement scheme—stipulating that his daughter was merely an unwitting pawn manipulated by her father—the Department of Justice will drop all criminal charges against Tiffany."
Arthur sat completely frozen on the stones.
"However," Eleanor continued, her sapphire eyes drilling into Arthur’s soul, "if you choose to protect yourself, Arthur—if you attempt to fight the indictment—the US Attorney will prosecute both of you under the RICO statute. Tiffany will face a mandatory minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. You will face thirty."
Eleanor paused, letting the crushing reality settle upon the father and daughter.
"So, Arthur. Here is your chance to prove you are indeed a father. You built a monster by feeding her arrogance. Will you save her now by sacrificing yourself? Or will you let her burn beside you to save your own skin?"
Tiffany grabbed her father’s arm with both hands, her nails digging into the cheap fabric of his jacket. "Dad! Dad, please! You said you’d protect me! Sign the confession! Tell them I didn't know! Dad, please!"
Arthur Vance slowly pulled his arm out of his daughter’s grip.
He didn't look at her.
His eyes darted across the cobblestones, calculating, assessing, scheming. Even in the depths of total ruin, the parasitic instincts of a financial predator were still twitching inside his brain.
"Fifteen years..." Arthur muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible. "If... if I sign the confession, there’s no bail. Mandatory remand. I’d be sixty-eight before I ever saw the sun again. My life would be over."
Tiffany stared at him, her jaw dropping in utter disbelief. "Dad...? What are you saying? You stole the money! You bought the yacht! You gave me the papers to sign!"
"You knew what you were signing, Tiffany!" Arthur suddenly snapped, his voice turning shrill and venomous. "Don't play the innocent child now! You wanted the clothes! You wanted the private villas in Ibiza! You knew damn well we weren't making twenty million dollars a quarter on tech stocks! You enjoyed every single cent of that stolen money!"
"Dad!" Tiffany screamed, horror crashing over her face like ice water. "You're my father!"
"And I'm a human being!" Arthur shouted back, standing up and backing away from her. "Why should I die in a concrete cage for a brat who brought this entire catastrophe down on our heads over a fucking tray of pastries?!"
Arthur spun around toward Eleanor, his face twisted with desperate, manic ambition. "Eleanor! If I give the federal prosecutors the offshore ledger—if I give them the names of the five foreign bank officials who facilitated the laundering—can I get immunity?! Can I cut a deal?!"
Eleanor Sterling didn't answer.
She simply looked at Tiffany Vance.
The young woman was sitting on the cold stones, completely shattered. Her mouth was open in a silent scream of agony. The illusion of her entire life—the wealth, the protection, the father who claimed to adore her—had just dissolved into thin air, exposing the ugly, rotting truth beneath.
She was utterly, completely alone.
Eleanor walked toward Tiffany. She stopped inches from where the girl was weeping, reached down, and gently placed a linen handkerchief into Tiffany’s trembling hand.

"Do you see now, Tiffany?" Eleanor whispered softly. "This is the man you modeled your soul after. This is the world you thought was worth trampling an old woman for. Look at it. Smell it. It is nothing but garbage."
