Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Reckoning

"Wait! Mom, no! Listen to me!" Jason scrambled forward on his knees, his hands reaching desperately for Eleanor’s ankles. "If you let them arrest me, I’m looking at twenty years! Grand larceny, wire fraud, bank forgery, interstate conspiracy! Mom, I’ll die in prison! You can’t do this to me! I’m your only baby!"

Eleanor stepped back smoothly, avoiding his touch as if he were made of venomous serpents.

"You are not a baby, Jason," she said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth that had nurtured him for nearly four decades. "You are a thirty-eight-year-old criminal who looked at his mother and saw an asset to be liquidated."

"Arthur, talk to her!" Jason pleaded, turning his frantic gaze toward the family attorney. "Arthur, you’ve known me since I was seven! You came to my Little League games! Tell her she can settle this with the bank! We can use the equity in the Tribeca apartment to repay the trust! We can make restitution before the indictment is filed!"

Arthur Hayes looked down at Jason with an expression of profound disgust. He adjusted his glasses and pulled a fountain pen from his breast pocket.

"The Tribeca apartment was purchased with the proceeds of grand larceny, Jason," Hayes said coldly. "The moment Investigator Cole filed his preliminary report this afternoon, an immediate federal asset freeze was placed on every single account and real property associated with your name, your mistress’s name, and your shell companies. You own nothing. You have access to nothing. The only thing you currently possess in this world is the clothes on your back and the right to remain silent."

"Arthur, please!" Jason choked, tears dripping onto his lapels.

"Furthermore," Hayes continued, looking at his legal pad, "as the legal representative of the Vance Family Estate, I have already drafted an emergency amendment to Eleanor Vance’s testamentary directives. As of four o'clock today, you have been formally, irrevocably removed as a beneficiary, executor, and trustee of any asset bearing the Vance name. You have been completely disinherited."

"You disinherited me?" Jason whispered, the reality crashing down on him with the weight of a falling mountain. "Mom... you took me out of the will?"

"You took yourself out of this family, Jason," Eleanor replied. She looked at him with clear, dry eyes. The tears that had threatened to fall earlier had completely evaporated, burned away by the white-hot clarity of betrayal. "You thought my love was a blank check you could cash whenever your greed outran your competence. You thought because I was an old woman, I would roll over, cry, and sign whatever you put in front of me to keep the peace."

Eleanor took a slow, deep breath, her hand lightly touching the dried blood on her temple.

"My silence was never weakness, Jason. It was patience. I gave you every opportunity over the last four years to come clean. I noticed the discrepancies in Henry's pension statements eighteen months ago. I noticed the strange corporate filings registered to this address. I didn't go to the police right away because part of me—that foolish, desperate part of a mother’s heart—hoped you would come to dinner one Sunday and say, 'Mom, I made a terrible mistake, and I need help.'"

She looked him directly in the eye.

"You never came to dinner to talk. You only came to take. And tonight, you brought a vulture into my kitchen to draw my blood."

Vanessa, still pinned against the counter by the deputy, hissed through clenched teeth. "Don't call me a vulture, you self-righteous old bitch! You think you’re so pure? You sat on millions while your son was drowning!"

"My son wasn't drowning, Vanessa," Eleanor replied without even looking in her direction. "He was poisoning his own well. And you were holding the cup."

Eleanor turned to the senior deputy, who had already pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.

"Deputy Miller," Eleanor said calmly, "I wish to press every available charge. Physical assault with a deadly weapon against Vanessa Vance. Grand larceny, financial elder abuse, residential extortion, and criminal fraud against Jason Vance. I want them removed from my property immediately, and I want an emergency restraining order filed before midnight."

"No! Mom! MOM!" Jason screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria as Deputy Miller stepped behind him, grabbing his right arm and pulling it behind his back with practiced, professional efficiency.
