Chapter 5 - The Shadow Syndicate

Investigator Marcus Cole cleared his throat, breaking the suffocating stillness that followed Eleanor’s words. He tapped his pen against the metal folder.

"Unfortunately, Mrs. Vance," Cole said gravely, "the Tribeca apartment and the secret child only represent the beginning of the financial liability. If it were merely a matter of stolen insurance proceeds and marital infidelity, this would be a matter for the state prosecutor and the probate court. But Jason’s transactions crossed into an entirely different jurisdiction six months ago."

Jason’s eyes widened in fresh terror. He looked at Cole, shaking his head frantically. "No... please. Don't bring that up here. Not in front of them."

"You don't get to choose what comes to light today, Mr. Vance," Cole replied sternly. He turned to Eleanor and Attorney Hayes. "Mrs. Vance, did Jason ever explain why he urgently needed a two-million-dollar collateral bridge within forty-eight hours?"

"He said his investment firm was facing an audit," Eleanor answered, crossing her arms over her chest, keeping her posture impeccably straight despite the exhaustion gnawing at her bones.

"His firm wasn't facing a standard regulatory audit," Cole said, pulling out a set of encrypted transaction logs stamped with the seal of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). "Sixteen months ago, after exhausting the remainder of the stolen life insurance funds on bad short positions in the tech sector and maintaining two separate households, Jason Vance turned to non-traditional credit facilities."

Vanessa scoffed derisively from against the counter, her voice dripping with venom. "Non-traditional credit? What does that mean? Loan sharks?"

"Precisely, Mrs. Vance," Cole confirmed without a hint of humor. "A private mezzanine lending entity operating out of northern New Jersey, fronting for a high-interest illicit credit syndicate. Jason borrowed two million dollars at an annualized compounding interest rate of thirty-eight percent. He secured that private loan using the deed of this very estate—using the forged power of attorney documents Vanessa assisted in preparing."

Vanessa gasped, her eyes darting between Cole and Jason. "You used this house to secure an illegal loan from mobsters?!"

"The principal was due yesterday at noon," Cole stated. "When the wire failed to clear, the syndicate dispatched representatives to Jason’s Manhattan office. They didn't find him there, because he had already fled here to force Mrs. Vance into executing an official, legally unassailable transfer of the deed. Jason knew that if the property wasn't cleanly transferred to his holding entity by tonight, the lenders would initiate an involuntary, extra-legal foreclosure."

"They were going to kill me!" Jason suddenly screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged, pathetic howl from the floor. "Mom, you don't know who these people are! They waited for me in the parking garage! They had photographs of Claire! They had photographs of Vanessa! They gave me until midnight tonight to deliver a clean, notarized deed of full ownership, or they were going to put me in the Hudson River!"

"And you thought it was better to put your mother on the street than to face the consequences of your own disgusting choices?" Attorney Hayes boomed, stepping forward, his face flushed with righteous anger. "You brought violence to this doorstep! You brought criminal liability into Henry Vance’s sanctuary!"

"I had no choice!" Jason wailed, clawing at his hair with both hands. "I had no choice!"

"You had a thousand choices," Eleanor answered, her voice dropping into a register of profound, icy clarity. "You had the choice to confess to Arthur four years ago. You had the choice to live within your means. You had the choice to come to me as a son and tell me you were drowning. But you didn't do that. You chose to let your wife bash my skull with my grandmother’s china. You chose to scream in my face and demand the roof over my head."

She turned her back on him completely, facing Investigator Cole and the sheriff's deputies.

"Mr. Cole, where do the authorities stand on these illicit lenders?" Eleanor asked.

"Federal agents and the state organized crime bureau executed search warrants on their commercial front in Fort Lee two hours ago," Cole revealed, a thin, satisfaction-filled smirk touching his lips for the first time. "The entire operation has been dismantled. Three of their primary enforcers are already in federal custody. The threat to your personal physical safety from that syndicate has been neutralized."

Jason froze, his hands still tangled in his hair. He stared up at Cole in dazed incomprehension. "They... they were arrested? Today?"

"At two-thirty this afternoon, Mr. Vance," Cole replied smoothly. "Which means your frantic rush to extort your mother this evening was not only monstrous—it was entirely pointless. The creditors you were running from are currently sitting in federal holding cells in Newark."

Vanessa let out a wild, bitter laugh that bordered on hysteria. "Pointless... It was all pointless! We threw our lives away for nothing!"

May you like

Eleanor looked at the clock above the kitchen hearth. It was barely seven in the evening. In less than an hour, her entire reality had been ripped apart, dissected, and exposed under the harsh light of criminal law.

"Deputy," Eleanor said softly, gesturing toward the two people she had once called family. "Please remove these trespassers from my home."
