Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of de la Rosa

The vaulted corridors of the Audiencia Nacional—Spain’s highest criminal court—were swarming with reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers when Elena arrived. Flanked by Sofia Morales and three senior partners from Madrid’s most prestigious litigation firm, Elena cut through the sea of flashing cameras with icy elegance, ignoring the shouted questions from the press.
*"Señora Alvarez! Did you know your husband was funneling money to offshore accounts?"*
*"Is it true the de la Rosa family estate has been seized?"*
*"Señora, what do you have to say about Julian de la Rosa's claims that this is a personal vendetta?"*
Elena offered no answers. She walked straight into Courtroom Number Four and took her seat in the front row of the public gallery, her posture immaculate.
Five minutes later, the side door opened, and Julian and Beatrice were led into the courtroom by National Police escorts.
The transformation was shocking.
Julian looked haggard, his designer clothes rumpled and dirty, his eyes hollow with dark circles, his hands shackled to a waist chain. When his eyes caught Elena sitting in the gallery, a flash of pure, unadulterated terror crossed his face.
Beatrice was even worse. Stripped of her pearls, her designer makeup smeared, she looked like an old, frail woman crushed by the weight of reality. She leaned heavily on a court bailiff, her arrogance completely dissolved into trembling, pathetic whimpers.
Judge Martinez, a veteran jurist known for his zero-tolerance stance on white-collar corruption, took his seat at the elevated bench.
"We are here to consider the application for provisional bail for the defendants Julian de la Rosa and Beatrice de la Rosa," Judge Martinez announced, adjusting his spectacles as he examined the thick case file. "The state prosecutor has charged both defendants with grand corporate embezzlement, aggravated fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. Señor Garrido, you may present your arguments."
Señor Garrido, a high-priced Madrid defense attorney sweating profusely through his bespoke suit, stood up quickly.
"Your Honor," Garrido began, his voice straining for theatrical indignation. "This entire prosecution is the grotesque result of a bitter domestic separation! The complainant, Señora Elena Alvarez, is a vengeful spouse seeking to destroy a distinguished Spanish family name over personal marital disagreements! My clients are pillars of the Madrid cultural community! Señora Beatrice de la Rosa is seventy-two years old and suffers from severe cardiac vulnerability! Julian de la Rosa has deep familial roots and poses zero flight risk! We demand immediate release on minimal recognizance!"
Judge Martinez looked over the top of his glasses at Garrido, completely unimpressed. "Zero flight risk, Señor Garrido? The police report indicates that Señor Julian de la Rosa was apprehended in his bedroom with two packed suitcases containing half a million euros in bearer bonds, sixty thousand euros in stolen jewelry, and a one-way first-class ticket to Buenos Aires booked under an alias."
Garrido stammered, his face turning bright red. "A... a planned architectural consultation, Your Honor! Nothing more!"
"And what of the four-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-euro fraudulent transfer attempted at midnight?" the prosecutor interjected, rising to her feet. "A transfer initiated using stolen corporate biometric keys while the complainant was being subjected to physical assault in a public dining room?"
Julian suddenly broke. He lunged forward against the defense railing, his chains rattling loudly against the wood.
"Elena! Tell them!" Julian screamed, his voice breaking into hysterical sobs that echoed across the courtroom. "Tell them it was a misunderstanding! Elena, I love you! I was confused! My mother pushed me into the development deals! She controlled the accounts! She forced me to do it!"
Beatrice’s head snapped toward her son, her eyes widening in absolute shock at his instant betrayal. "Julian! You cowardly little monster! How dare you blame your mother! I did everything for you! I built your reputation! I protected you when your firms collapsed!"
"You ruined me!" Julian shouted back, completely oblivious to the judge, the press, and the bailiffs. "You told me Elena was just an ignorant peasant we could milk for money! You told me she would never fight back! You brought Clara into this! You destroyed my life!"
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Judge Martinez slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the sound block with the force of a thunderclap.
"SILENCE!" the judge roared. "Silence in this court, or I will hold both defendants in contempt!"
The two police escorts forcefully forced Julian and Beatrice back into their chairs. The entire courtroom was dead quiet, every spectator transfixed by the grotesque spectacle of a noble dynasty tearing itself apart like rabid dogs in public view.
Judge Martinez looked down at the defendants with cold, merciless disdain.
"The evidence presented by the prosecution and the forensic audit team from Vanguard Financial Strategies is overwhelming," Judge Martinez stated. "The defendants have demonstrated clear intent to flee the jurisdiction, systematic destruction of evidence, and an utter disregard for the rule of law. Bail is denied. Both defendants will be remanded to the Soto del Real Penitentiary without bond pending immediate criminal trial."
Judge Martinez brought his gavel down one final time.
BANG!
"Court is adjourned."
