Chapter 8 - The Audit at Dawn

By seven o'clock in the morning, the rain had stopped, replaced by the pale, cold light of an October dawn breaking over the glass skyscrapers of Madrid.

Elena arrived back at Vanguard Tower. She had stopped at a boutique hotel near the Atocha station just long enough to take a scalding shower, scrub the last traces of red wine from her skin, and change into a razor-sharp, bespoke charcoal-gray power suit paired with a crisp white silk blouse. Her dark hair was pulled back into an immaculate, low chignon. She wore no jewelry except for a simple platinum watch. Her gold wedding band had been left behind on the marble floor of the Toledo villa.

When she stepped out of the private elevator onto the fifty-second floor, the entire executive suite was buzzing with the electric tension of an army preparing for battle.

Twenty forensic accountants, six corporate attorneys, and two representatives from the Bank of Spain were gathered around the vast mahogany conference table, surrounded by towering stacks of financial ledgers, digital server readouts, and legal petitions.

"Elena," Sofia Morales, the firm’s chief legal counsel, said as she hurried forward with a steaming cup of black coffee. "The preliminary injunctions have been granted. Judge Martinez signed the emergency freezing order at six-fifteen. Every personal and business bank account connected to Julian de la Rosa, Beatrice de la Rosa, and Apex Architectural Design is completely locked."

Elena took the coffee, taking a slow, steady sip as she walked to the head of the conference table. "And the media?"

Sofia grimaced slightly. "El País, El Mundo, and Expansión have already picked up the story. The footage of Julian being escorted out of his Chamartín villa in handcuffs by the Central Fraud Division went viral on Twitter thirty minutes ago. The headlines are brutal: *'The Fall of the House of Montes: High-Society Architect Arrested in Multi-Million Euro Embezzlement Scandal.'*"

Elena sat down at the head of the table, opening her master laptop. "Let them print the truth. What is our net corporate exposure?"

David, the head of digital infrastructure, stepped forward and tapped the main projector screen. A detailed financial matrix illuminated the wall.

"Julian and his mother managed to extract a total of 1.8 million euros over the past twenty-four months through thirty-four falsified vendor invoices," David reported. "However, because Elena intercepted the four-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-euro Swiss wire transfer last night, and because the Toledo villa and Julian’s architectural offices stand as collateral for the defaulted loans, Vanguard’s capital reserves are completely protected. In fact, after the judicial liquidation of their seized assets, Vanguard will register a net recovery of nearly 3.2 million euros."

A quiet sigh of relief swept through the room. The junior analysts looked at Elena with pure reverence. Most executives facing a simultaneous marital betrayal and multi-million-euro fraud would have collapsed under the psychological weight. Elena had dismantled the entire conspiracy in less than eight hours.

"Good," Elena said, her voice commanding absolute authority. "Now, we move to the final phase. Julian’s defense attorney, Señor Garrido, has requested an emergency bail hearing for eleven o'clock this morning at the National High Court."

Sofia frowned. "Garrido is going to argue for provisional release on medical grounds. He’s already leaking statements to the press claiming that Beatrice suffered a severe hypertensive crisis in holding and that Julian must be released to care for her."

Elena closed her laptop with a sharp, definitive click.

"Have our car brought around, Sofia," Elena said, standing up. "I think it's time I personally attended my husband's bail hearing."
