Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The silence in the room stretched so thin it felt ready to snap.
Outside, the Atlantic storm finally broke. Torrential rain lashed against the heavy glass windows, accompanied by the low rumble of thunder that shook the walls. The smell of gunsmoke in the hallway was thickening.
"You forgot one detail, Elena," I said softly, my voice miraculously steady.
She tilted her head, a mocking smile touching her lips. "And what is that, my love?"
"You said I was a man of balance sheets and lawyers," I whispered. "You forgot that Marcus Cole wasn't hired by my company. He was hired by my father. And in my family, we never keep all our assets in one portfolio."
Marcus didn't fire his shotgun.
He didn't need to.
With a speed that defied his massive frame, Marcus kicked the heavy mahogany nightstand across the floor, slamming it violently into the side of the bed.
The impact collided directly with Elena’s fractured left ribs.
A scream of sheer, blinding agony ripped from her lungs as the bone fragments shifted. Her aim went wild, the gun discharging once into the ceiling, showering us in white plaster dust.
Before she could adjust her grip, Marcus’s hand closed around the slide of the weapon, wrenching it from her fingers with a sickening pop as her wrist dislocated.
She collapsed back onto the mattress, gasping for air, her face contorted in absolute, unadulterated torment.
"Move!" Marcus barked, grabbing me by the collar of my torn tuxedo and hauling me toward the secondary service corridor behind the walk-in closet. "The heavy assault unit just breached the ground-floor gallery! We have thirty seconds before they breach the stairwell!"
"What about her?!" I yelled over the roar of thunder, looking back at the woman who had shared my bed for eight years, now writhing in the ruins of her own lies.
"She’s the bait," Marcus said mercilessly. "Her own mercenaries have orders to leave no witnesses. When they find her in that room without the keys, they won't ask questions."
We sprinted through the concealed reinforced escape tunnel that connected the master suite directly to the subterranean boat dock. Behind us, the sounds of heavy combat erupted in the main house—flashbang grenades detonating with concussive booms, followed by the relentless chatter of submachine guns as Elena’s mercenaries realized they had been betrayed by their own employers.
We reached the subterranean boathouse. The water of the canal was churning violently from the storm outside. Tied to the slip was a custom-built, twin-engine midnight-black interceptor boat.
Waiting inside the craft were two heavily armed operators in sterile tactical gear. And tucked safely between them, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, was Chloe.
"Daddy!"
The moment she saw me, she leaped into my arms. I caught her, pressing her face into my chest, tears finally streaming down my cheeks, washing away the blood and plaster dust.
"I've got you, baby," I sobbed, my voice breaking. "Daddy’s got you. You're safe."
Marcus unmoored the heavy braided lines, leaping onto the deck as the engines roared to life with a deep, guttural vibration that rumbled through the hull.
"Julian!"
A voice shrieked from the top of the concrete slipway.
I looked back.
Elena was clinging to the railing of the dock stairs. Her cashmere robe was drenched in blood from reopened surgical incisions. Her broken ribs forced her to bend nearly double, but in her hand, she held an electronic detonator.

"You take that boat into the bay, and I detonate the channel mines!" she screamed over the howling storm. "Nobody leaves this island without me! If I drown, Julian... you drown with me!"
