Chapter 5 - The Velvet Confession

I walked back into the main residence like a dead man walking.

The house was vast, silent, and cold. Outside, the palm trees swayed violently in the rising ocean breeze, signaling an incoming Atlantic squall. In the guest wing, Dr. Evans was packing his surgical instruments into a leather satchel.

"Julian," Evans said quietly, catching me in the hallway. He looked exhausted. "Three lateral rib fractures on her left side. No punctured lung, thank God, but severe internal bruising. I’ve administered a localized nerve block and a mild sedative. She needs complete bed rest for six weeks. She was very lucky. A few more pounds of direct pressure and those bone shards would have shredded her spleen."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said, my voice empty, hollowed out of all emotion. "Briggs will escort you off the island. Have your staff maintain total discretion."

"Of course, Julian. Is she... is she safe here?" Evans asked, his eyes darting toward the armed guards in the foyer.

"Nowhere is safe, Arthur," I murmured. "Get home to your family."

I stepped into the dim, climate-controlled bedroom.

Elena was lying propped against a mountain of white pillows, her gown replaced by a soft cashmere robe. Her face was pale, glistening with a thin sheen of perspiration. The monitor beside her bed was beeping in a slow, rhythmic pattern. When she saw me enter, her face relaxed into a fragile, relieved smile.

"Julian... you came back," she breathed, her voice raspy from the sedative. "Did you... did you have Marcus arrested?"

I didn't answer. I walked over to the armchair beside her bed and sat down. I pulled Victor Sterling's gold pen from my pocket and set it gently on the white duvet between her legs.

Elena’s gaze dropped to the pen.

The monitor beside her spiked instantly. *Beep-beep-beep-beep.*

The fragile, victimized expression on her face vanished, stripped away in a millisecond, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that I had never seen in our eight years of marriage.

"You watched the footage," she said flatly. The tears were gone. Her voice was remarkably steady, stripped of all vulnerability.

"I watched a man risk his life to drag you out of a hydraulic crush," I answered, leaning forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "I watched him take three rounds to his ballistic vest while throwing his own body over yours. And then I watched you stand in a ballroom full of four hundred people and name him as your abuser."

Elena let out a bitter, breathy laugh that ended in a sharp gasp of pain as her broken ribs seized.

"You don't understand anything, Julian," she whispered, her eyes burning into mine. "You live in a world of balance sheets, stock options, and hostile takeovers. You think you conquered Victor Sterling three years ago? You didn't conquer him. You just forced him underground. You took his legitimate assets, but you left him with his network. And for three years, he has been slowly poisoning everything around you."

"Why were you in that car, Elena?" I demanded, the fury finally breaking through my frozen composure. "Why did you kiss his hand?!"

"Because he has our daughter!" she screamed, the sound tearing through her throat, causing the heart monitor to shriek in alarm.

She seized my lapels with both hands, her knuckles white, her face inches from mine, wild with absolute madness.

"The Chloe at Blackwood Academy isn't our Chloe, Julian! Victor took her four days ago during the field trip to Orlando! The girl living in that dorm is a double—an orphan trained by his syndicate! Marcus was working with Victor’s extraction team! If I didn't frame Marcus tonight at the gala, Victor was going to send me Chloe’s severed fingers in a box!"
