Chapter 7 - Sins of the Maternal Bloodline

The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner of my mother's study sounded like the countdown to an execution.
I stared at the crimson wax seal on Evelyn's will, my trembling fingers leaving faint, sticky smudges on the glass desktop.
"Two weeks..." I whispered, my voice barely audible against the silence of the sealed room.
"Yes, Emily; two weeks until the Vance ancestral estate, valued at nearly three billion dollars, fully vests into your name," Richard confirmed.
Daniel swiped his finger across the high-resolution tablet screen, pulling up the complex corporate hierarchy of the Vance family foundation.
"If Emily were legally declared mentally incompetent or institutionalized before that date, who would take control of the voting shares?" Daniel asked shrewdly.
Richard’s jaw hardened until the muscle beneath his neatly trimmed beard twitched with venomous rage.
"Under the original 1994 Vance family bylaws, sole custodial stewardship would revert to the next surviving blood relative," Richard answered through clenched teeth.
"Marcus," I said, cold dread washing over me as the entire nightmare became crystal clear.
The humiliation on the terrace was never just an emotional outburst or a rich woman's cruel game.
Vanessa had carefully gathered twenty-five of the most powerful and influential social arbiters in Southern California to bear witness to my supposed instability.
If I had retaliated, if I had lost control and attacked her with a broken bottle or screamed like a madwoman, they would have had video proof of a psychotic break.
Julian would have used the corporate proxies to file an emergency conservatorship petition with the county probate court first thing Monday morning.
"She wanted to lock me away in a psychiatric clinic," I realized aloud, horror gripping my vocal cords.
"They planned to strip you of every legal right you possessed, take your mother’s inheritance, and drain my company simultaneously," Richard snarled.
Before anyone could speak further, the intercom system on the mahogany desk chimed with three sharp, urgent tones.
"Mr. Harrison, pardon the interruption," came the voice of Chief Security Officer Barnes from the ground floor holding room.
"The federal agents are finishing their preliminary processing of Mrs. Harrison before the transport van arrives."
"She is demanding to speak with you; she claims she has critical intelligence regarding Marcus Vance's current location in Los Angeles."
Richard looked at me, his eyes searching my face for any sign of hesitation or fear.
"Do you want to face her, Emily, or should I have them drag her straight to the metropolitan detention center?" he asked gently.
I looked down at my ruined dress, then lifted my chin, feeling a sudden surge of unyielding resolve replace the terror inside me.
"I want to hear every single word she has to say, Dad," I replied, my voice steady for the first time all afternoon.
"Maria, bring my daughter a clean silk robe and a hot basin immediately," Richard commanded into the house phone.
Ten minutes later, with my face cleaned of the greasy cream and my hair wrapped in a fresh white towel, I walked side-by-side with my father into the basement security suite.
The holding room was sterile and cold, illuminated by stark fluorescent strip lighting that offered no flattering angles.
Vanessa sat handcuffed to a heavy steel interrogation table, her makeup streaked with black mascara and drying soda.
Two armed federal marshals stood sentinel by the reinforced steel door, their expressions entirely indifferent to her silent weeping.
When the door swung open and my father stepped into the room with me by his side, Vanessa lifted her bloodshot eyes.
"Richard... please, you have to listen to me," she sobbed, straining against the heavy metal cuffs fastened to the tabletop.
"You have thirty seconds to explain why my wife’s exiled brother was wiring millions into your offshore account," Richard warned, remaining standing with his arms crossed.
Vanessa swallowed hard, her haughty veneer completely stripped away, revealing the terrified, cornered social climber beneath.
"Marcus approached me six months ago at the charity polo gala in Montecito," Vanessa confessed, her voice trembling violently.
"He told me that you were planning to cut me out of the estate entirely once Emily turned twenty-one."
"He showed me fabricated legal drafts claiming you were leaving every single asset to her and filing for divorce within the year!"
Richard didn't flinch; his expression remained colder than an Arctic glacier.
"And instead of coming to your husband of three years, you chose to conspire with a corporate criminal to destroy my daughter?" Richard demanded.
"He promised me one hundred million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds, Richard!" she shrieked, tears splashing onto the metal table.
"He said Julian had already secured the proxy votes through Vance Capital to freeze your executive authority!"
"All I had to do was make sure Emily suffered a public, recorded emotional collapse in front of the board members' wives today!"
"The cake... the soda... it was all Marcus’s idea," she whimpered, turning her desperate gaze directly toward me.
"He told me that if I provoked you enough to make you swing at me or scream incoherently, the board would approve an emergency medical guardianship!"
I stepped forward until my hands rested on the back of the metal chair opposite her.
"Did you honestly think I wouldn't fight back, Vanessa?" I asked, looking straight into the eyes that had terrorized me for three years.
"Did you really believe that my mother didn't leave behind proof of who her real family was?"
Vanessa’s pale face lost whatever remaining dignity it had left as she realized how thoroughly she had been outplayed.
"Marcus is at the Grand Horizon Tower in downtown Los Angeles," Vanessa blurted out desperately, eager to save herself from federal prison.
"He is operating out of the penthouse suite under a false Swiss passport; he has a private jet fueled and waiting at Van Nuys Airport!"
Daniel stepped up beside my father, holding up his tablet as a red tracking beacon pinged over a high-rise in the financial district.
"The IP address Julian used to access the honeypot just routed directly through the private server grid of the Grand Horizon penthouse," Daniel confirmed.
Richard turned toward the federal marshals without giving his weeping wife another single glance.
"Take her away," Richard said coldly.
"Charge her with premeditated physical assault, felony fraud, and domestic conspiracy."
Vanessa began to scream hysterically as the marshals unlocked her cuffs from the table and pulled her toward the hallway.
"Richard, no! You can't leave me to rot in prison! I am your wife!" she wailed, her voice fading down the corridor until the heavy steel doors slammed shut.
Richard turned to Daniel and gripped his shoulder with iron intensity.

"Call our tactical security transport and notify the Department of Justice tactical unit," Richard commanded.
"We are going downtown to finish this family feud once and for all."
