Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Patriarch

The heavy garden gate swung open with a violent metallic clang that resonated like a gunshot against the mansion's limestone walls.
Every single head on the terrace snapped toward the courtyard entryway in terrified synchronization.
Framed by the arched wisteria, my father, Richard Harrison, stood frozen in place.
His broad shoulders were squared beneath a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his sharp navy tie perfectly straight.
His dark-brown hair, touched with distinguished silver at the temples, looked immaculately styled after a long day of corporate negotiations.
For one fleeting second, his piercing blue eyes scanned the terrace, taking in the shattered stillness of the frozen guests.
Then his gaze dropped straight down to the center of the flagstone patio where I knelt shivering in a pool of dark soda and crushed cake.
The color completely drained from his face, replaced in a fraction of a second by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror.
"EMILY!" his voice roared, a thunderous sound that seemed to rattle the very crystal flutes sitting on the tables.
He dropped his leather executive briefcase onto the manicured turf without a second thought.
He sprinted across the stone patio with an athletic urgency that belied his forty-eight years.
Vanessa was still clutching the ruined cake platter, her face flushed with an ugly, arrogant smirk that hadn't yet faded.
Before she could even register his presence, my father reached her, ripping the heavy silver platter from her hands with ferocious force.
He hurled the platter across the lawn, where it tumbled into the rose bushes with a deafening crash.
He placed his massive, broad frame squarely between Vanessa and my broken form, acting as an impenetrable human barricade.
"WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER?" he bellowed, his voice vibrating with a primal rage I had never heard in my entire life.
I reached out with my trembling, frosting-coated hand, desperately clutching the back of his tailored suit trousers.
"Dad..." I choked out, my voice cracking under the weight of utter humiliation and overwhelming relief.
Richard immediately pivoted on his heel and dropped to one knee right into the disgusting puddle of soda and melted icing.
He did not care about his five-thousand-dollar suit or the stares of the twenty-five billionaires watching his every move.
His large, warm hands gently cupped my sticky, trembling cheeks, his blue eyes searching my face with raw heartbreak.
"Emily... oh, sweetheart, look at me," he whispered, his deep voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury.
He pulled a pristine white linen handkerchief from his breast pocket and began gently wiping the thick frosting away from my burning eyes.
"I've got you, Emily. Nobody touches you ever again," he muttered, pulling me against his broad chest despite the filthy sludge covering my clothes.
Vanessa took a step back, her eyes widening slightly before she quickly assembled her signature mask of polished indignation.
"Richard, please! Don't make an embarrassing scene in front of our most important investors!" she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest.
My father stopped wiping my face; his entire posture went rigid as stone as he slowly rose to his full six-foot-two height.
When he turned back toward Vanessa, his blue eyes were completely devoid of warmth, glowing with arctic fury.
"Don't make a scene?" he repeated in a dangerously quiet tone that made several nearby guests visibly flinch.
"She completely destroyed the entire party arrangement! She insulted my hospitality and ruined the afternoon!" Vanessa argued, her voice climbing an octave.
"So your response was to physically assault my child and dump soda over her head like an animal?" Richard demanded, closing the distance between them.
Vanessa rolled her eyes dramatically, waving a manicured hand as if brushing away a tiny, insignificant fly.
"Oh, stop being so dramatic, Richard! It was just a harmless, playful prank! A joke between family members!" she scoffed.
"A joke?" Richard's arm whipped outward, his index finger trembling with rage as he pointed directly at my shivering body.
"Look at her! You humiliated her! You terrorized her in front of twenty-five witnesses on our own property!" he shouted.
Vanessa's mask of innocence cracked completely down the middle, revealing the vicious, calculating predator underneath.
"You always take her side! You defend this spoiled, useless little brat over your own devoted wife!" she screeched, losing all composure.
"She is my blood, Vanessa! She is my daughter!" Richard boomed, his chest heaving with fury.
"And I am the woman who owns half of your empire now! I am your wife!" she screamed back, lunging forward with sudden mania.
Before anyone could predict her next move, Vanessa seized a heavy silver meat platter from the neighboring banquet table.
With a crazed scream, she swung the sharp-edged silver tray horizontally toward my father’s face with terrifying velocity.
Richard's military training kicked in instantaneously; he raised his left forearm, intercepting the blow with a bone-jarring thud.
Without blinking, his right hand clamped down around Vanessa’s wrist, twisting it just enough to disarm her cleanly.
He stripped the heavy silver tray from her grasp and hurled it straight down onto the terrace stones.
CLANG!
The sound of the heavy metal smashing against the stone floor echoed across the canyon like a funeral knell.
Vanessa shrieked in fury and lunged at him with her sharp acrylic nails aimed directly for his throat.
Richard delivered a sharp, controlled push against her shoulders, creating immediate distance to protect himself and me.
Vanessa lost her balance in her four-inch silver heels, stumbling backward into the massive dessert banquet table.
The entire wooden table tipped under her weight, sending towering crystal bowls of berries and vintage champagne glasses cascading downward.
Plates shattered into a thousand jagged pieces as Vanessa crashed onto her backside among crushed strawberries and pools of expensive liquor.
The wealthy onlookers audibly gasped, several women covering their mouths while men instinctively took two steps backward.
Richard did not offer her a hand; he stepped backward, planting himself firmly between the ruined table and my trembling frame.
"You will pack your bags and leave this property immediately, or I will have the county sheriffs drag you out in zip-ties," Richard growled through clenched teeth.
Vanessa sat on the ground amidst the shattered porcelain, her hair disheveled for the first time, her face contorted with pure hatred.
"You can't prove I did anything wrong without a fight, Richard! It's your word against mine, and my lawyers will bleed you dry!" she snarled.
She truly believed she still had leverage, that her social standing and calculated lies would protect her from consequences.
She genuinely believed no one had the courage to defy her.

Then, a crisp, calm voice shattered the heavy silence from the edge of the terrace.
"Actually, Mrs. Harrison, it is not your word against his."
