Chapter 4 - The Screen of Truth

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird beating against the iron bars of a cage.

Officer Miller took another heavy step forward, the steel handcuffs jingling ominously in his right hand.

My father stood tall, his jaw set, ready to take the fall to keep the police from escalating the situation in front of me.

He was willing to be dragged out of his own home in handcuffs just to ensure no more violence touched my life tonight.

I couldn't let that happen.

I had spent two years cowering in the shadows of this magnificent house, swallowing my tears and letting Victoria dictate my reality.

I had let her convince me that my voice was too small, that nobody would believe a grieving daughter over an elegant socialite.

Not tonight.

“OFFICER, STOP!” I screamed, the sound tearing through the bathroom with such piercing clarity that Officer Miller froze mid-stride.

Both officers turned their attention toward me, their expressions shifting as they took in my frantic, wild eyes.

Victoria lowered her hands from her face, her brows knitting together in sudden, sharp annoyance at my interruption.

“Olivia, sweetie, don't make this harder on your father,” Victoria said, her voice dripping with fraudulent maternal pity.

I didn't look at her; I looked directly into the dark, focused eyes of Officer Hayes.

“She’s lying about everything,” I said, my voice shaking with fury rather than fear as I pointed toward the marble counter.

“She didn't try to trim my split ends, and my father didn't attack her unprovoked.”

“Miss Bennett, we need to secure the room first—” Officer Hayes began, her professional tone meant to placate an agitated victim.

“I RECORDED THE ENTIRE THING!” I yelled, cutting her off with absolute, shattering certainty.

The word ‘recorded’ hung in the humid, mirror-strewn air like a detonated grenade.

The manufactured tears on Victoria’s cheeks dried instantly, her posture stiffening into an unnatural, petrified rigidity.

“What?” Victoria gasped, her voice losing every ounce of its trembling vulnerability, replaced by a sudden, sharp panic.

Without waiting for permission, I reached my trembling hand toward the silver tray behind the large crystal bottle of perfume.

Officer Miller instinctively reached for his holster, but stopped when he saw what my fingers pulled from the shadows.

I held up my black smartphone, the screen still glowing faintly with the red recording timer ticking past thirty-eight minutes.

I pressed the red square to end the capture, my thumb shaking so violently against the glass that it took two attempts to save the file.

“I knew what she was going to do to me the moment she ordered me into this bathroom,” I said, tears spilling hot down my cheeks.

“I turned on my camera and hid it behind that bottle before she brought out the clippers.”

Victoria’s face drained of every drop of color, turning the sickly shade of bleached bone beneath her expensive foundation.

“She’s bluffing!” Victoria cried, taking a frantic step back into the bathroom, completely forgetting her limp and her fake injuries.

“Officers, she’s an unstable girl! She probably downloaded something off the internet to frame me!”

Officer Hayes stepped forward, completely ignoring Victoria’s frantic protests, her eyes locking onto my glowing phone screen.

“Young lady, bring that phone over here slowly and show me what you have.”

I stepped carefully over the piles of my own severed hair and the glittering shards of glass, holding the phone out like a lifeline.

My father watched me, his gray eyes wide with an emotion so profound it bordered on reverence.

He had no idea I had possessed the foresight to protect myself; he thought I had simply been caught in an inescapable trap.

I tapped the video thumbnail and hit the play button, turning the screen toward Officer Hayes and Officer Miller.

Through the phone's small but crisp stereo speaker, the silence of the bathroom was shattered by the high-pitched, grinding buzz of the clippers.

Then, with horrifying clarity, Victoria’s recorded voice exploded into the room:

“LOOK AT YOURSELF! NOW SMILE!”

On the high-definition screen, the entire nightmare replayed with flawless, indisputable detail.

The video showed Victoria standing over me, her face contorted into an ugly, sadistic sneer as she twisted my jaw toward the glass.

It showed the clippers biting into the side of my head, shaving thick clumps of chestnut hair while I wept and begged for mercy.

It showed her laughing—a cold, cackling laugh that sounded nothing like the refined society wife she pretended to be.

And then, the video captured the violent crash of the door flying open, followed by my father’s desperate roar of paternal protection.

The camera clearly documented my father charging in, grabbing Victoria’s wrist solely to force the vibrating clippers away from my scalp.

It showed Victoria breaking free, cursing, and lunging with an open hand to violently strike my face while I cowered on the stool.

It showed my father intercepting her swing, shoving her backward to protect me, and Victoria crashing into the cabinet that dislodged the mirror.

There was no unprovoked domestic assault by Richard Bennett.

There was only a father defending his terrified, mutilated daughter from an unhinged, violent abuser.

Officer Hayes stared at the screen, her jaw setting into a hard, furious line as the video concluded with Victoria’s shrill threats.

Beside her, Officer Miller slowly slid his handcuffs back onto his utility belt, turning his cold, appraising gaze away from my father.

He looked directly at Victoria, who stood frozen beside the cabinet, her mouth opening and closing like a fish suffocating on dry land.

“That... that video is taken out of context!” Victoria stammered, her voice pitching up into a desperate, hollow shriek.

“She edited it! She baited me into losing my temper! You don't understand what she puts me through in this house!”

Officer Hayes turned her body completely away from me, her hand resting on the radio clipped to her shoulder epaulet.

May you like

The look of professional neutrality was completely gone from her face, replaced by the righteous disgust of an officer confronting pure malice.

“Mrs. Bennett,” Officer Hayes said, her voice dropping to a freezing, merciless chill. “Place your hands behind your back right now.”
