Chapter 2 - The Shattered Mirror

The metallic buzz of the clippers grew louder as Victoria brought the blade down toward my right temple.
I lunged sideways off the stool, but her fingers instantly twisted into my remaining hair, wrenching my skull backward with agonizing force.
A scream tore from my throat, echoing against the damp marble tiles, ringing with sheer, unadulterated desperation.
Before she could press the steel teeth against my bare skin, a tremendous boom shook the foundation of the second floor.
The heavy mahogany bathroom door burst inward with the violent force of a battering ram, splintering against the doorframe.
Standing framed in the ruined threshold was my father, his dark overcoat soaked with rain, his leather briefcase already discarded on the hallway runner.
His broad chest heaved as his piercing gray eyes locked onto the horrific tableau illuminated beneath the vanity lights.
He saw the buzzing clippers vibrating in Victoria’s clenched fist, the thick swathes of dark hair littering the floor, and the jagged bald patch above my ear.
He saw my tear-streaked face twisted in agony, my lips trembling as blood welled where Victoria’s fingernails had broken my skin.
For one suspended heartbeat, the entire universe stopped breathing inside that luxurious bathroom.
Then, a sound erupted from my father’s throat that I had never heard in my entire life—a primal, deafening roar of absolute fury.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!”
He crossed the marble floor in three thunderous strides, his body moving faster than thought, his trench coat billowing like an omen of wrath.
Victoria barely had time to widen her eyes before my father’s large hand clamped around the wrist that held my hair.
His grip was like an iron vise, wrenching her arm away from my head with such explosive authority that she cried out in shock.
With his other hand, he seized the electric clippers, ripping the cord straight from the wall socket with a shower of tiny sparks.
The mechanical buzzing died instantly, leaving behind the ragged, suffocating sound of our frantic breathing.
Victoria stumbled backward on her designer heels, catching herself against the edge of the double glass shower enclosure.
“Richard!” she shrieked, clutching her bruised wrist, her platinum hair disheveled for the very first time. “Are you out of your mind?”
My father stepped directly between us, his massive frame shielding my trembling body completely from her sight.
“What am I doing?” his voice rumbled, shaking with a terrifying, venomous rage that vibrated through the floorboards.
“What in God’s name are you doing to my child in our own home?”
I collapsed against the base of the vanity stool, my trembling fingers instinctively rising to touch the raw, cold stubble above my ear.
“Dad...” I sobbed, the sound small, fragile, and utterly broken.
My father turned his head slightly, and the murderous fury in his eyes instantly dissolved into absolute, gut-wrenching anguish.
He looked down at the mounds of chestnut hair resting beside his leather dress shoes, then looked at my terrified, bleeding face.
“Oh, sweetheart,” he whispered, his strong voice cracking down the middle as if his ribs had snapped.
He turned back toward Victoria, his jaw locked so tightly that the muscles in his cheeks twitched violently.
“Did you do this?” he asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that was far more dangerous than his scream.
Victoria recovered from her initial shock, her jaw hardening into that haughty, aristocratic defiance she wore like armor.
She crossed her arms over her burgundy silk blouse, lifting her chin to look down her nose at him.
“She was being insubordinate, Richard, and she needed to be reminded of her place in this household,” she said, without a trace of remorse.
“Insubordinate?” my father repeated, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief at the words leaving her mouth.
“She is a twenty-year-old woman! She is my daughter, living under my roof!”
“And she acts like a conniving, spoiled child who deliberately disrespects my authority the moment your back is turned!” Victoria shouted back.
My father took a menacing step toward her, his fists clenched at his sides, fighting with every ounce of discipline not to cross a physical line.
“You cornered my daughter in a locked bathroom and shaved her head like a prisoner of war while she screamed for her life!”
Victoria rolled her eyes dramatically, waving a dismissive hand in the air as if swatting away an annoying fly.
“Oh, please, Richard, stop being so theatrical! It’s just hair, it will grow back!”
Behind my father's shoulder, she caught me staring at her through my tears, and the dismissive facade instantly twisted into pure, unbridled malice.
“Look at her back there, playing the pathetic victim like she always does!” Victoria hissed, her control snapping.
Without warning, she lunged forward, trying to slip around my father’s right side, her manicured hand raised like a claw aimed directly at my face.
I gasped, throwing my arms over my head to brace for the impact of her blow.
The slap never landed.
My father anticipated her move instantly, his hand shooting out to intercept her forearm mid-swing with a deafening clap.
“DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH HER!” he roared.
Victoria struggled furiously against his grip, kicking her heels against the floor. “Let go of me, you brute! Let me go!”
My father twisted his torso and shoved her firmly away from where I was cowering on the vanity stool.
The momentum sent Victoria staggering backward across the slick, hair-strewn marble until her back slammed hard into the tall wooden linen cabinet.
The impact rattled the heavy furniture, sending shockwaves through the adjoining drywall where an antique gold-framed mirror was mounted.
The fragile mounting bracket gave way under the violent vibration, and the four-foot mirror tilted forward off the wall.
It plunged through the air, striking the edge of the granite counter before detonating across the floor in a blinding explosion of silver glass.
Shards flew in every direction, skittering across the smooth surface and slicing through the tufts of my discarded hair.
Victoria let out a shrill scream, freezing against the linen cabinet with her hands held high, completely uninjured but visibly shaken by the destruction.
My father did not look at the broken glass; he immediately dropped to his knees in front of me, oblivious to the sharp fragments piercing his trousers.
“Olivia, look at me. Are you hurt anywhere else? Did she cut your skin with the blade?”
I couldn't form words; the sheer terror of the last thirty minutes was vibrating through my bones like an electrical current.
I threw my arms around his broad neck, burying my face into the damp wool of his overcoat, sobbing so hard my chest ached.
“Dad... she wouldn't stop... she wouldn't let me leave...”
His arms wrapped around me with crushing warmth, his hand gently cradling the uninjured side of my head against his heart.
“I’m here now, baby. I’m right here. Nobody will ever lay a hand on you again, I swear to God on my life.”
From across the room, Victoria lowered her hands, her eyes narrowing as she watched our embrace with burning resentment.
“This is completely insane!” she spat, brushing imaginary dust off her silk blouse. “You’re choosing this pathetic child over your wife!”

My father didn’t even look in her direction, keeping his face buried in my hair as his shoulders shook with silent, protective grief.
Then, heavy, synchronized footsteps pounded up the grand staircase and echoed down the second-floor hallway outside the shattered doorway.
