Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Toast

The accusation hung in the air like a guillotine blade.

"Murderer?!" someone shouted from the back of the room.

"Call the police!" another guest yelled.

Chloe was on the floor next to her mother now, weeping hysterically, clutching Eleanor’s arm. "Mom! What did you do?! You told me Dad had a heart attack! You told me he signed the papers willingly! What did you do?!"

"Shut up, Chloe! Shut up!" Eleanor screamed back at her own daughter, shoving Chloe away with wild, unhinged ferocity. "She fabricated it! Julian Hayes bought that deepfake video! It's Hayes money! They want to steal our family estate!"

Julian stepped forward, looking down at Eleanor like an exterminator observing a cockroach.

"Hayes money didn't buy that video, Eleanor," Julian said, his deep baritone cutting through her hysterical shrieks. "Your own home security system recorded it. You hired an IT technician three years ago to wipe the hard drives of your estate's closed-circuit cameras. What you didn't know is that your technician had a conscience—and a sister who died of the very disease Arthur Vance’s insulin patents were designed to treat. He kept a mirrored backup on a cold server in Switzerland. It took my security team twenty-four hours to retrieve it."

Julian turned slightly, gesturing toward the back of the conservatory.

Two men in sharp, charcoal suits walked forward. Between them was an elderly man in a rumpled suit, his head hung low, trembling from head to toe.

Eleanor gasped, her eyes bulging. "Sterling...?"

"Yes, Dr. Robert Sterling," Clara announced into the mic. "The doctor who signed my father's death certificate. He is currently under a federal immunity agreement with the United States District Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. He has already signed a fifty-page sworn affidavit detailing every dime you paid him from the Cayman accounts to falsify the toxicology report."

Dr. Sterling didn't look at Eleanor. He looked at the floor, his voice cracking as he spoke to the room: "I'm sorry... God forgive me, I’m so sorry. She threatened my medical license. She threatened my family. Arthur was poisoned with a concentrated dose of digitalis and potassium. It wasn't natural causes."

A collective roar of outrage erupted from the guests. Several prominent business partners who had invested with Eleanor Vance stood up and began walking out, muttering curses and calling their legal counsels in real-time.

"Wait! There's more, isn't there, Mother?" Clara’s voice pierced through the chaos once again.

The crowd fell silent again, wondering how much deeper the pit of depravity could go.

Clara gestured toward the gold-embossed bar at the side of the stage, where two crystal flutes of Dom Pérignon were waiting for the traditional bridal toast.

"You didn't just want to humiliate me with that dress today, Eleanor," Clara said, stepping down from the stage, her ivory silk gown trailing elegantly behind her. She walked over to the bar, picked up the flute that had been designated for her, and brought it back to the altar.

"Bring up file three," Clara ordered.

The giant LED screen shifted.

This time, it showed a series of high-resolution laboratory chemical analysis reports, dated yesterday evening at 8:00 PM from an independent toxicology lab in Santa Monica. Beneath the lab report was a photograph of Eleanor Vance’s personal assistant meeting a shadowy figure in an underground parking garage in Century City.

"Thirty minutes before this ceremony began," Clara revealed, holding the champagne glass up to the light, "my security intercepted the bridal suite catering staff. In this champagne flute, intended specifically for me, lab technicians found fifty milligrams of liquid Clonazepam mixed with Scopolamine—commonly known as 'Devil’s Breath.'"

The room gasped in horror.

"You planned to drug me during the reception," Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "You had a notary public waiting in the mansion's private library. You were going to have me sign over the power of attorney for Arthur’s remaining European clinical patents while I was mentally incapacitated. You wanted to bleed my father's legacy dry, even after killing him!"

Clara walked directly over to where Eleanor knelt on the floor.

With slow, deliberate precision, Clara tilted the glass.

The drugged, poisoned champagne poured over Eleanor’s head, soaking her perfectly coiffed hair, dripping down her face, and staining her million-dollar emerald gown.

Eleanor didn't move. She couldn't move. She was completely broken, staring at the marble floor as the champagne dripped from the tip of her nose.
