Chapter 4 - The Stripping of the Mask

The phrase hit the room like a sonic boom.

Several women in the front rows gasped, clutching their chests. Men leaned forward in their seats, exchanging frantic, bewildered glances. The officiant, an elderly Presbyterian minister, stood frozen with his Bible half-open, looking like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

"Clara! What on earth are you doing?!" Eleanor hissed, lunging forward with a sudden burst of frantic speed. "Put that microphone down this instant! Have you completely lost your mind?! You’re hysterical!"

Eleanor reached out her manicured hand, her claws outstretched to rip the microphone from Clara's grip.

She never touched it.

With a swift, dominant step, Julian Hayes moved between them. Standing at six-foot-two, his broad frame completely eclipsed Eleanor Vance. His arm shot out, catching Eleanor’s wrist in mid-air with an iron grip that forced her backward.

"DON'T TOUCH HER!" Julian’s voice cracked through the conservatory like thunder. It was not the voice of a polite groom; it was the ferocious roar of a man who would tear down the world before letting a single hand harm his bride.

Eleanor staggered back, her high heels catching on the hem of her emerald gown. "Julian! She’s humiliating you! Look at what she’s wearing! She’s having a nervous breakdown in front of your peers!"

"The only humiliation in this room," Clara spoke into the mic, her tone ice-cold, "is standing right there in emerald green."

Behind the altar, the massive sixty-foot high-definition LED screen—originally set up to display a romantic slideshow of Clara and Julian’s courtship—suddenly flickered to life.

A sharp digital chime echoed through the speakers.

The screen did not show photos of sunsets or engagement rings. It displayed a high-resolution, blow-up screenshot of an iMessage thread between Eleanor Vance and Chloe Vance from three days ago.

The text bubbles were undeniable, stamped with verified timestamps and phone numbers:

> **Chloe (10:14 AM):** *Did you tell Madame Laurent to trash Clara's silk dress?*

> **Eleanor (10:16 AM):** *Done. I told them we are canceling the order due to "gross stylistic incompetence." I gave Madame Laurent’s assistant a $10,000 NDA bonus to stay quiet. Clara has no idea.*

> **Chloe (10:18 AM):** *LMAO! Did the costume place in Burbank deliver the rhinestone clown suit?*

> **Eleanor (10:22 AM):** *Yes. It looks completely trailer-trash. Julian’s board members are going to be utterly disgusted. When Clara walks in looking like an uneducated stripper, Julian’s grandmother will demand he annul the marriage before dinner. That little bitch will be completely under our thumb again.*

> **Chloe (10:25 AM):** *She deserves every bit of it. Can’t let her inherit Dad’s remaining trust money. Julian can pay our debts instead.*

Audible shocks and shrieks rippled through the 150 guests.

Old Lady Hayes, Julian’s formidable grandmother who held the majority voting shares in Hayes Global, rose to her feet in the second row. Her face was flushed with absolute fury as she stared at the screen, her cane thumping against the floor.

"My god..." someone whispered loudly. "They sabotaged their own daughter!"

"Eleanor Vance did that? How monstrous!"

Chloe’s face drained of every drop of color. She threw her hands over her face, turning her back to the crowd as if she could hide from the giant screen. Eleanor’s jaw dropped. Her chest heaved, her eyes darting frantically from Julian to Clara to the screen, looking like a caged animal realizing the bars were electrified.

"Turn that off!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking into a shrill, hysterical pitch. "It's fake! It’s AI-generated! Clara, you sick, jealous child, how dare you fabricate texts to destroy your own family!"

"Fabricated?" Clara smiled.

With her free hand, Clara reached down to her waist. Her fingers found the hidden release latch of the magnetic strips she had installed just an hour ago.

"You thought you could force me to be your clown, Mother," Clara said, her voice steady and resonant. "You thought you could drag me into the mud so you could feel clean."

With one decisive, theatrical movement, Clara pulled the release cord.

The heavy, ridiculous rhinestone corset split down the middle with a sharp *zip*. Clara swept her arms back, and the garish, clunky outer shell of tulle and rhinestones fell away like the molting skin of a serpent, pooling in a lifeless, sparkling heap at her feet on the white carpet.

Underneath, revealed to the world, was the masterpiece.

The ivory silk gown clung to Clara’s form in immaculate, breathless perfection. The liquid silk caught the conservatory sunlight, shimmering with quiet, ethereal royalty. Without the clownish distraction, Clara looked like an empress—breathtaking, untouchable, and radiating pure power.

The entire conservatory erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause.

Guests stood up, clapping, cheering, completely captivated by the cinematic brilliance of the reveal. Julian smiled, his eyes burning with fierce adoration as he reached down, took Clara’s hand, and kissed her knuckles with unwavering devotion.

Eleanor was shaking uncontrollably, her face mottled red and white. "You... you think you're clever, Clara? So you saved your little dress! Is that what this circus is about?! A dress?!"

Clara lowered the microphone, looking down at her mother with pity, sorrow, and absolute ruthlessness.

"No, Mother," Clara said softly, before bringing the mic back up to her lips. "The dress was just the prologue."

Clara raised her left wrist and tapped her smartwatch one final time.

"Play file two," Clara commanded into her mic.
