Chapter 7 - The Breached Threshold

The heavy brass door handle completed its downward turn with a sharp mechanical snap.
Ethan stood perfectly still in the center of the dark room, his silhouette framed against the laptop’s glow.
The door pushed inward an inch before catching violently against the manual security bar Ethan had engaged.
A harsh, muffled curse sounded from the hallway, followed by the heavy thud of a shoulder slamming the wood.
“Ethan, open this door immediately!” a familiar, pompous voice demanded through the crack.
It wasn't Margaret's voice.
It belonged to Dr. Robert Vance, the Harrison family’s trusted private physician.
“Stand down, Robert, before I break every bone in your treacherous hands,” Ethan answered coldly.
“You are acting irrationally, Ethan!” Vance shouted, his tone dripping with false professional concern.
“Claire’s vitals plummeted on our central telemetry monitors before the breaker failed!”
“She is in acute respiratory failure and requires immediate transfer to the intensive surgical ward!”
“Open the door and allow my medical team to stabilize your wife!”
Ethan let out a bitter, savage laugh that sounded like cracking ice.
“You mean the same medical team that has been feeding her liquid thallium in her afternoon tea?”
There was an instantaneous, suffocating silence on the other side of the mahogany door.
Even through the solid wood, we could hear Vance’s ragged, startled intake of breath.
“Ethan... you don't know what you are talking about,” Vance stammered, his facade beginning to crumble.
“We heard the audio recording, Robert,” Julian interjected from the shadows behind the laptop.
“We heard you negotiate the three-million-dollar Zurich transfer with Margaret Harrison forty minutes ago.”
“Every byte of your treason has already been mirrored to an off-site forensic server.”
“You are finished, Vance.”
A second of pure stillness hung in the air, followed by a harsh, guttural order from an unknown man outside.
“Breach it now!”
A deafening crash echoed through the suite as a heavy steel battering ram slammed into the mahogany frame.
The wood splintered along the deadbolt with the sound of a rifle shot.
The door flew open violently, rebounding against the interior drywall with a thunderous bang.
Two heavily built men in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests surged through the threshold.
Behind them stood Dr. Robert Vance, clutching a leather medical satchel, his eyes wild with desperation.
The first operative reached for his belt, attempting to draw a stun baton from his tactical harness.
Ethan didn't wait for him to gain his footing.
With explosive power, Ethan lunged forward, swinging the weighted base of the chrome IV pole.
The steel base struck the lead operative directly across the tactical helmet with a bone-jarring clang.
The man stumbled sideways, crashing into the visitor table and sending medical brochures scattering.
The second mercenary lunged toward the bed, his gloved hands reaching for my portable oxygen line.
“Get away from her!” Julian roared, throwing his entire body into a tackle against the man's midsection.
The mercenary grunted, driving a heavy elbow into Julian’s ribs, sending the slender analyst to the floor.
Before the guard could turn back toward me, Ethan was already upon him.
Ethan dropped the IV pole and grabbed the man by the throat and tactical vest with superhuman fury.
He hoisted the operative off his feet and slammed him backward into the tiled wall with crushing force.
The drywall cracked behind the guard's head, and the man’s eyes rolled back as he slid into unconsciousness.
The first guard was scrambling to his feet, pulling a heavy canister of tactical pepper spray from his belt.
Ethan spun around like a coiled predator, driving a devastating right hook into the man’s exposed jaw.
The operative's head snapped back, his teeth clicking together as he collapsed face-first onto the tiles.
Dr. Vance stood alone in the doorway, trembling uncontrollably, the leather satchel slipping from his grip.
His face was completely drained of color, his glasses hanging crookedly off one ear.
Ethan stepped forward slowly, his black suit disheveled, his eyes burning with terrifying wrath.
He reached out, grabbed Vance by the silk lapels of his white doctor’s coat, and lifted him onto his toes.
“You took an oath to save lives, Robert,” Ethan whispered, his knuckles brushing against Vance’s trembling throat.
“And instead, you tried to murder my innocent wife for three million pieces of silver.”
“Ethan... please... Margaret forced me!” Vance sobbed, wet tears tracking down his wrinkled cheeks.
“She had records of my malpractice in Boston... she threatened to destroy my family!”
“You destroyed yourself,” Ethan snarled, shoving the doctor violently to his knees upon the hard floor.

Ethan leaned down, glaring directly into the disgraced physician’s terrified eyes.
“Now you are going to sit right there and watch the empire you served burn to the ground.”
