Chapter 2 - The Hidden Zipper

Ethan’s head snapped toward the corner where his mother was frantically crawling.

Margaret’s crimson dress was hiked up ungracefully as she stretched her arm under the nightstand.

Her fingers grazed the bear's soft beige foot just as Ethan sprang from the floor like a panther.

He caught her wrist in a crushing grip before she could pull the toy toward her.

“What are you doing?” Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

Margaret flinched, wincing under the sheer strength of her son’s grip.

“Ethan, let go of me, you are hurting your mother!” she shrieked, trying to wrench free.

“I asked you a question, Margaret!” he bellowed, refusing to release her wrist.

He had never called her by her first name in his entire thirty years of life.

The name fell from his lips like poison, making Margaret freeze in absolute horror.

The doors burst open again before she could weave another poisonous excuse.

Nurse Evelyn rushed inside, followed by two respiratory therapists and an orderly.

“Code team is here, what happened?” Evelyn shouted, immediately rushing to my bedside.

Ethan held his mother in place for one more second, his eyes boring into her soul.

Then he shoved her hand away from the furniture and stepped back toward me.

“My mother dragged my wife out of her bed and disconnected her life support,” Ethan said clearly.

The medical team froze for half a beat, their eyes widening in shock.

Margaret scrambled to her feet, smoothing her rumpled dress while her face burned red.

“That is a filthy lie! She was delirious, she threw herself onto the floor!” Margaret protested.

“Nurse, please check my wife’s wrists and arms right now,” Ethan ordered without blinking.

Evelyn quickly knelt beside me, her skilled fingers carefully examining my bruised skin.

She gasped softly as she observed the dark purple finger marks already forming on my arms.

The indentations matched the exact size and pressure of Margaret’s diamond rings.

“The patient has acute defensive contusions on both forearms,” Evelyn announced firmly.

The respiratory therapist quickly checked my vitals and secured the oxygen straps behind my ears.

“Her saturation is climbing back to eighty-eight, but her pulse is running dangerously high,” he reported.

Ethan gently assisted the orderly and Evelyn in lifting my limp body back onto the mattress.

The moment my head sank into the soft down pillow, the room stopped spinning.

Ethan held my right hand between both of his, pressing his lips against my cold knuckles.

“I will never leave you alone again, Claire, I swear to God on my life,” he whispered brokenly.

Margaret stood near the foot of the bed, her chest heaving as she clutched her gold purse.

“Ethan, you are making a massive scene over an ungrateful girl who married you for money,” she snapped.

“Shut your mouth before I have you thrown out of this building in handcuffs,” Ethan snarled.

He didn't even turn his head to look at her as he spoke.

Nurse Evelyn adjusted my IV lines, her face grim and professional.

“Ma'am, you need to step outside right now, the patient cannot endure this stress,” Evelyn said.

“Do not speak to me like that, I am Margaret Harrison, I fund this entire medical wing!” she hissed.

“I don't care if you own the hospital, you are interfering with emergency care,” Evelyn countered.

Ethan ignored their argument and bent down toward the floor beside my bed.

He picked up the small beige teddy bear that had caused his mother so much terror.

The bear had slightly worn fur and a bright red satin ribbon knotted neatly around its neck.

Ethan had bought it for me at a small fair during our very first weekend together in Vermont.

It had been sitting on my hospital side table ever since I had been admitted.

As Ethan held the toy, he noticed that Margaret’s eyes dilated with sheer, naked terror.

She stopped arguing with the head nurse completely.

Her jaw slackened, and every drop of blood drained from her aristocratic cheeks.

“Ethan... give that toy to me,” she said, her voice dropping into a desperate, hollow rasp.

Ethan frowned, turning the stuffed animal over in his large hands.

“Why do you care so much about a twenty-dollar stuffed bear, Mom?” he asked.

“It’s dirty, it was on the floor, it needs to be incinerated with medical waste,” she stammered.

I gathered every ounce of strength remaining in my diaphragm and squeezed Ethan’s fingers.

“Ethan... look... beneath the ribbon,” I forced the words past the oxygen mask.

Margaret took a wild step toward the bed, raising her hands like claws.

“ETHAN, NO! DO NOT TOUCH THAT!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Evelyn and the male orderly immediately stepped directly into her path, blocking her advance.

“Step back, ma'am, or security will physically restrain you!” the orderly warned loudly.

Ethan ignored the chaos completely and lifted the bear up toward the overhead light.

His thumbs brushed aside the red satin ribbon wrapped tightly around its neck.

Beneath the thick plush fur, his fingertips brushed against a tiny metal zipper pull.

It was a hidden pocket, expertly stitched into the seam of the bear's back.

Ethan looked at me, his blue eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and growing dread.

“Open it,” I whispered, watching Margaret’s face crumple into an expression of utter ruin.

Ethan pinched the miniature silver zipper and pulled it slowly down the bear's spine.

The sound of the tiny teeth separating seemed to echo through the entire room like thunder.

Ethan parted the polyester stuffing inside the cavity.

His fingers closed around a hard, cold, rectangular object concealed deep inside.

He pulled his hand out slowly.

Resting in the center of his palm was an unbranded, matte-black USB flash drive.

A heavy red strip of tamper-evident tape was wrapped around its metal casing.

Margaret let out a low, animalistic groan and staggered backward against the wall.

“No... no, please, Ethan... don't do this to our family,” she whimpered, sliding down the paint.

Ethan stared down at the black drive, then looked up at his mother's pale, trembling face.

The room had gone dead silent, save for the steady beep of my recovering heart monitor.

“What is this, Mom?” Ethan asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying stillness.

Margaret buried her face in her manicured hands and began to weep tears of pure panic.

Ethan turned to me, his knuckles white as he gripped the drive.

“Claire... what did she do to you?”
