Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Web of Deceit

The blow shattered Evelyn’s aristocratic poise in an instant.

She let out a strangled shriek, dropping the syringe onto the floor. The heavy steel base of the pole had split the skin along her hairline, and a dark ribbon of crimson spilled down her immaculate cheek, ruining her charcoal coat.

She stumbled backward, clutching her head, her pale blue eyes blazing with a mixture of shock and homicidal fury.

“You filthy little animal!” she screamed, lunging at me again with her manicured claws extended.

I didn't stay on the floor. Adrenaline surged through my veins, dulling the pain in my starved limbs. I scrambled backward, kicking the rolling bedside tray into her knees with all the force I had left.

The tray table slammed into her shins. Plastic medicine cups, water carafes, and steel basins crashed to the floor with a deafening racket. Evelyn tripped, her heels slipping on the spilled water, and crashed heavily against the wall.

I lunged for the door, threw the mechanical privacy bolt back, and wrenched it open.

“HELP!” I screamed into the hallway, my voice tearing through the quiet floor. “SOMEBODY HELP ME!”

Down at the end of the hall, two nurses emerged from the medication station, their eyes widening in horror at the sight of me covered in bruises, IV lines trailing from my arms, and Officer Higgins slumped unconscious on the floor behind me.

“Code White! Room 314! Call Security!” one of the nurses shrieked into her wall-mounted intercom.

Behind me, Evelyn recovered with terrifying speed. Seeing the hospital staff sprinting toward us, she realized her window of quiet assassination had slammed shut. But instead of fleeing toward the elevators, she grabbed me by the hair from behind, wrenching my head back with vicious force.

“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me!” she hissed into my ear.

She dragged me backward toward the emergency stairwell door just ten feet away. I clawed at her fingers, digging my nails into her wrists until she bled, but her grip was fueled by the madness of a woman watching her entire empire burn to ashes.

She kicked the heavy fire-exit door open, pulling me into the echo-chamber of the concrete stairwell. The door slammed shut behind us, locking automatically from the outside.

“Let me go!” I sobbed, struggling against the railing. Below us, four flights of concrete stairs spiraled down into the dark basement parking garage.

“Shut up!” Evelyn screamed, her face smeared with blood and sweat, her silver hair wild and untamed. She pinned me against the cold steel railing of the third-floor landing, leaning her full body weight against my chest. “You think Julian loves you? You think you’re special?”

She laughed—a high, psychotic, breathless cackle that echoed up and down the stairwell.

“Julian doesn't love you, Elena! He married you because you were weak! Because you were an orphan with nobody to protect you! He thought he could use you to wrest the trust away from me! He’s just as manipulative as his father was!”

“You’re lying,” I gasped, struggling to draw breath as the iron railing cut into my back. “Julian loves this baby! He loves me!”

“Julian knows nothing!” Evelyn snarled, her fingers tightening around my throat again, pushing my upper body back over the empty drop of the stairwell. “Arthur wasn't his father! Arthur was sterile, you stupid little girl! Julian is the bastard child of a stable hand I paid off thirty years ago so Arthur wouldn't divorce me and leave me penniless!”

My blood ran cold. The sheer depth of Evelyn’s lifelong web of lies, deceit, and murder made me sick to my very core.

“Arthur found out six months before he died,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with manic excitement as she pressed the cold metal of the railing deeper into my spine. “He was going to rewrite the will and expose Julian to the whole world. So I had Alistair slip thallium into his evening cordial until his liver rotted out from the inside.”

She looked down at my swollen stomach, her eyes darkening into pure pitch.

“And now, history repeats itself. Goodbye, Elena.”

She leaned all her weight forward, preparing to heave me over the railing into the four-story drop below.

Suddenly, the heavy fire door on the landing above was kicked off its hinges with an explosive *BANG!*

“GET AWAY FROM MY WIFE!”

May you like

Julian.
