Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Julian held his breath, every nerve ending in his body screaming with adrenaline. Through the narrow gap between the mahogany door and the frame, he watched Dr. Alistair Kane enter the study.

Kane didn't immediately notice Julian hiding in the shadows behind the door. The rogue physician’s attention was entirely focused on Arthur’s desk. Kane walked over, set his medical duffel bag on the polished wood, and pulled out an insulated thermal canister—the kind used for transporting biological specimens and controlled pharmaceuticals.

“Looking for this, Alistair?” Julian’s voice sliced through the darkness like a butcher’s blade.

Kane spun around with terrifying speed, raising the silenced pistol.

Julian didn't give him the chance to aim. With a primal roar fueled by three days of agonizing terror, Julian surged from behind the door, swinging the heavy steel crowbar with all his strength.

*CRACK!*

The crowbar struck Kane’s right forearm. The sickening sound of snapping bone echoed through the room. The pistol flew from Kane’s shattered grip, skittering across the hardwood floor and vanishing under the massive leather sofa.

Kane let out a strangled shriek of pain, clutching his broken arm against his chest. He staggered back against the desk, knocking over a brass lamp that shattered on the hearth.

“You arrogant little bastard!” Kane snarled, his face twisted in agony, sweat instantly beading on his pale forehead. “Just like your pathetic father!”

Julian didn't lower the crowbar. He advanced, his eyes burning with lethal intent, his chest heaving. The heavy steel point was leveled directly at Kane’s throat.

“Move an inch, and I’ll cave your skull in,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “What were you doing in my mother’s bedroom? What’s in that bag?”

Kane leaned against the desk, breathing heavily through his teeth, but despite the excruciating pain of his broken arm, a grotesque, mocking smile spread across his lips.

“You’re too late, Julian,” Kane whispered, blood dripping from his lip where he had bitten down against the pain. “You think your little detective friend has everything under control? You think your mother is sitting in a cold cell waiting for an arraignment?”

A cold spike of dread plunged into Julian’s stomach. “What are you talking about?”

“Evelyn didn't call the family lawyer when she was arrested,” Kane chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. “She called Judge Harold Sterling. A man whose offshore accounts have been funded by Vance money for two decades. Your mother’s bail was posted an hour ago through an emergency sealed hearing. She walked out the back door of the precinct while Detective Miller was busy filing paperwork.”

“You’re lying,” Julian growled, but his hand began to tremble on the crowbar.

“Check your phone, boy!” Kane hissed. “Why do you think I’m here? I wasn't sent here to hide. I was sent here to collect the rest of the antimony and Arthur’s Zurich bank records before we leave the country. And Evelyn? Evelyn had a far more pressing errand.”

Kane leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with sadistic triumph.

“Where do you think a loving grandmother goes the moment she makes bail? She goes to visit her sick daughter-in-law at St. Jude’s Memorial, of course.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Julian’s mind flashed to Elena, weak and trapped in that hospital bed, hooked to IV lines, carrying their child. The lone police officer stationed outside her door wouldn't stand a chance against Evelyn Vance walking in with a high-priced attorney and a forged judicial order.

Julian didn't hesitate. With a swift, brutal kick, he drove his heavy work boot into Kane’s knee. The joint buckled with a sickening pop, sending the doctor crashing to the floor, howling in agony.

Julian snatched Kane’s duffel bag, grabbed the calfskin journal from the desk, and sprinted out of the study.

He burst through the front doors of Blackwood Manor into the pouring rain, leapt into his truck, and slammed his foot on the accelerator. The tires shrieked against the wet gravel, spitting stones as the truck hurtled down the winding driveway toward the highway.

As he drove like a madman through the sheet of rain, Julian ripped his phone from his pocket, dialing Detective Miller’s direct line on speakerphone.

The phone rang three times before Miller answered, his voice breathless and chaotic in the background.

*“Miller!”*

“Detective! Kane was at the house!” Julian screamed over the roar of the engine. “He told me Evelyn made bail through Judge Sterling! Tell me Elena is safe! Tell me you’re with her right now!”

There was a horrific, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.

When Miller spoke, his voice was choked with sheer disbelief and panic.

*“Julian… listen to me. I just arrived at the third floor. Officer Higgins… he’s down. Someone dosed his coffee with a paralytic.”*

“Elena!” Julian roared, slamming his fist against the steering wheel. “WHERE IS ELENA?!”

May you like

*“Her room is empty, Julian,”* Miller replied, his voice breaking. *“The IV lines have been cut. Elena is gone.”*
