Chapter 18 - Highway 26

The rain on Highway 26 was blinding.
Emily kept both hands clenched on the steering wheel of the family minivan, her knuckles white. The speedometer hovered at seventy miles per hour. In the rearview mirror, she could see Grace and Benjamin strapped into their booster seats, both clinging to their stuffed animals, their eyes wide with confusion.
"Mommy, where are we going?" Grace asked, her small voice trembling. "Why did Daddy have a gun?"
"Daddy is taking care of something for Aunt Lauren, sweetie," Emily said, forcing her voice to remain completely steady, projecting the calm she did not feel. "We’re going on a little adventure to Aunt Sarah’s house. Remember the horses she has?"
"In the middle of the night?" Benjamin asked.
"Sometimes adventures happen at night, buddy," Emily replied, her eyes flicking constantly between the road and the rearview mirror.
Two headlights had appeared behind her three miles outside the city limits.
At first, she thought it was just another commuter braving the squall. But every time she changed lanes, the black SUV behind her mirrored the maneuver. When she slowed to sixty, it dropped back. When she accelerated to eighty, it closed the distance.
Her phone on the dashboard buzzed violently.
The screen read: *DANIEL.*
Emily hit the speakerphone button instantly. "Daniel! Where are you? Are you okay?"
*"Emily! Listen to me!"* Daniel’s voice was ragged, competing with the roar of a car engine and howling wind. *"Julian’s men are following you! He has a tracker on the minivan!"*
Emily’s heart dropped into her stomach. "There's a black SUV behind me right now!"
*"Do not stop!"* Daniel shouted. *"I'm on Route 9 in Lauren's car, heading toward the highway junction. Lauren is with me. Take the logging road exit at Mile Marker 14! It leads to the old weigh station! There are state troopers stationed near the bypass!"*
"The logging road is unpaved, Daniel! In this rain, the van will get stuck!"
*"Emily, if you stay on the highway, they will PIT maneuver you into the ravine! Take the exit!"*
The call cut out into static as the connection died in the mountain pass.
Behind her, the black SUV suddenly accelerated. Its high beams flared to blinding intensity, flooding the interior of Emily’s van with harsh white light. The heavy vehicle surged forward, slamming violently into the rear bumper of the minivan.
The impact jarred Emily’s teeth, sending the van skidding across the slick asphalt. Grace screamed. Benjamin burst into tears.
"Hold on to your seats!" Emily screamed, fighting the steering wheel as the van fish-tailed against the wet surface.
The black SUV pulled up along the driver’s side, matching her speed. Through the tinted, rain-streaked glass, Emily caught a glimpse of a masked driver turning his wheel sharply toward her.
*He’s going to run us off the bridge,* Emily realized with terrifying clarity.

Ahead, the yellow sign for *Exit 14: Blackwood Logging Road* appeared through the sheets of rain—two hundred yards away.
Emily didn't hit the brakes. She stomped on the gas pedal.
