Chapter 14 - The Voice in the Shadows

The study smelled of old leather, copper, and cold rain blowing through the shattered foyer.

Daniel shoved the flash drive into the side of his laptop. Emily stood directly behind him, her hand gripping his shoulder so hard her nails bit through the cotton of his shirt. Margaret remained frozen in the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself as if trying to hold her frail body together. Julian stood ten feet back, leaning against the doorframe, watching them like a spectator at a coliseum.

Daniel clicked open the audio file. The date stamped on the file made Emily’s stomach drop: *October 14th—6:42 PM.*

It was the exact date and hour of Emily’s fall five years ago.

The audio hissed with static, then the sound of a phone line ringing twice. A click.

*"Is it done?"*

The voice that came through the laptop speakers was unmistakable. It was Margaret. Cold, sharp, devoid of the gentle grandmotherly warmth she had displayed at the dinner table that very evening.

A younger, hyperventilating voice answered. Lauren. *"Mom... oh God, Mom, there's blood. She fell. She went over the rail."*

*"Did you get the papers signed?"* Margaret asked immediately, without a fraction of a second wasted on asking if Emily was alive.

*"No! She wouldn't sign them! She said she was going to call Daniel! She was going to tell him about the offshore account in the Caymans!"* Lauren was sobbing, her voice ragged and incoherent. *"Mom, she’s not moving. The baby... Margaret, the baby isn't moving!"*

A pause on the recording. Three long, agonizing seconds of utter silence.

Then Margaret’s voice returned, low and venomous. *"Listen to me, Lauren. Look at me through the phone and pull yourself together. If Emily wakes up and speaks to Daniel, the trust is voided. Julian will take the house, the firm, and you will go to prison for the forged signatures. Do you hear me?"*

*"Mom, what do I do?!"*

*"Check her pulse. If she’s breathing... you do not call 911. You wait ten minutes. Let the trauma take care of it."*

Emily choked back a scream, her hand flying to her mouth.

Daniel stared at the glowing screen, his face draining of all blood, his eyes wide and vacant as if his entire reality had just dissolved into ash.

On the recording, Lauren let out a guttural shriek. *"I can't! I can't leave her here! She’s Daniel’s wife!"*

*"She is an outsider!"* Margaret hissed through the speaker. *"She is threatening everything your father built! You leave her at the bottom of those stairs, Lauren, or I swear to God I will tell the police you stole the funds yourself!"*

The audio ended with the sound of a door slamming and the distant, frantic chime of the home's landline as Lauren, defying her mother, dialed 911.

Silence descended upon the study. Heavy. Suffocating. Lethal.

Daniel slowly turned his head away from the computer screen. He looked at Margaret, who stood trembling in the shadows, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"You told me she panicked," Daniel whispered. His voice was terrifyingly calm, the kind of quiet that precedes a catastrophic detonation. "You told me Lauren was mentally ill, that she acted alone, that you tried to save Emily."

"Daniel... you don't understand the pressure we were under..." Margaret stammered, raising her hands defensively. "Your father left us with debts... Julian was going to destroy us..."

"You told my sister to let my pregnant wife die on the floor," Daniel said, taking one slow, monstrous step toward his mother. "You told her to wait ten minutes."
