Chapter 8 - The Desperate Strike

The wail of the sirens reached a deafening crescendo outside Maison de L’Étoile. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the frosted glass facade of the boutique, throwing wild, chaotic shadows across the velvet-draped walls.

Arthur heard them. He knew what those sirens meant.

Handcuffs. A perp walk in front of news cameras. A cold concrete cell. The end of his luxury suites, his sports cars, his bespoke suits, and his fabricated prestige.

His mind shattered. The cornered rat inside him took over.

"No," Arthur snarled, his voice dropping into a guttural, psychotic rasp. "No! I'm not going to jail! Not for you! Not for your dead father!"

With a sudden, violent burst of adrenaline, Arthur lunged forward.

He didn't attack Julian. He knew he couldn't defeat Julian.

Instead, his bloodshot eyes locked onto me.

He reached into his pocket, his hand emerging with a heavy, gold-plated vintage pen—its solid brass tip pointed outward like an improvised shiv. He threw his entire body weight toward the velvet chair where I sat, his face contorted in a mask of murderous frenzy.

"If I lose everything, Clara, you won't live to enjoy it!" he screamed.

Time seemed to slow down.

I saw the gleam of the gold metal. I saw the wild, rabid hatred in his eyes.

Before I could even raise my hands to protect my face, a sound cracked through the boutique like a gunshot.

It was the sound of Julian’s fist connecting with Arthur’s jaw.

Julian had moved with terrifying, predatory precision. He stepped into Arthur’s path, pivoting his broad shoulders, and delivered a devastating, textbook cross directly to the side of Arthur’s face.

The force of the blow was cataclysmic.

Arthur was lifted entirely off his feet. His head snapped violently to the side, a spray of crimson mist bursting into the air, and he crashed sideways through a six-foot tempered glass display case.

The vitrine exploded in a shower of glittering, diamond-like shards.

Arthur collapsed onto the wreckage of velvet trays and shattered glass, completely unconscious, his jaw visibly dislocated, the brass pen rolling harmlessly across the marble floor until it clicked against the toe of Julian’s handmade leather oxford.

Julian didn't even breathe heavily. He stood over the unconscious wreckage of my ex-husband, his knuckles spotless, his expression as unreadable as an ancient monolith.

He slowly adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, smoothing the dark fabric over his wrist.

At that exact moment, the front doors were thrown open by four uniformed NYPD officers, their weapons drawn, led by two plainclothes federal agents flashing gold badges.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" the lead agent barked, his gun sweeping the room before immediately taking in the scene.

Julian turned calmly toward the officers, his voice dripping with cool authority.

"Agent Miller," Julian said, nodding toward the man on the floor. "You're just in time. The suspect attempted an armed assault on my wife after confessing to interstate wire fraud. You'll find the corroborating physical evidence in the portfolio on the counter."

Agent Miller took one look at Julian Vance, lowered his weapon instantly, and exhaled a long breath.

"Understood, Mr. Vance," the agent said. He gestured toward his officers. "Cuff him. Call an ambulance for the holding ward. We’re booking him directly into the Metropolitan Correctional Center."
