Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The heavy brass doors of the boutique swung open again with a crisp chime.
Marcus strode back in, his trench coat parting to reveal a thick, crimson leather portfolio stamped with the seal of the New York State Attorney General’s Special Financial Crimes Division.
Every eye in the boutique followed that red folder.
Arthur's knees were shaking now. Real, unvarnished terror glistened on his forehead, mixing with his styled hair and dripping down his temple. His companion with the Birkin bag had backed away so far she was practically pressed against the silk wallpaper in the corner, desperate to disassociate herself from the unfolding catastrophe.
"Julian," Arthur stammered, stepping toward him with open palms, abandoning every shred of dignity he possessed. "Mr. Vance. Please. Let’s talk about this like gentlemen. In private. We're in a public boutique, for God's sake! Think of the optics!"
"The optics?" Julian tilted his head, his tone razor-sharp. "You were quite comfortable with an audience when you kicked my wife against a vitrine three minutes ago."
"I lost my temper!" Arthur shouted desperately, sweat rolling down his cheeks. "It was an emotional reaction! We have history! She was my wife first—"
Julian moved.
It was not a hurried motion, but the raw speed and power behind it made everyone in the room flinch. Julian took one step forward, grabbed Arthur by the lapels of his Brioni jacket, and slammed him back against the marble pillar in the center of the showroom.
The solid stone pillar shook with a dull thud.
Arthur choked, his feet dangling two inches off the polished floor.
"She was never yours," Julian growled, his voice dropping into a guttural, terrifying register that made the boutique manager drop to his knees behind the register. "You stole her father's work. You stole her inheritance. You left her in the street to freeze. And then you dared to lay your filthy hands on her in my presence."
"Julian... please..." Arthur choked out, clawing at Julian’s iron forearms. His face was turning a mottled shade of plum. "I'll give it back... I'll settle out of court... whatever she wants!"
"It is too late for a settlement," Julian whispered cold as death. "You are going to prison, Arthur. And I am going to make sure you watch your entire world burn from inside a cage."
Julian released his grip. Arthur dropped to the floor in a heap, coughing violently, gasping for air as he rubbed his bruised throat.
Julian turned calmly toward Marcus and extended his hand. Without a word, Marcus placed the red leather portfolio into Julian’s open palm.
The boutique manager, trembling like a leaf, stepped forward with a cordless phone in his hand. "M-Mr. Vance... should I call the police? I can have the security team detain him—"
"Not yet, Gregory," Julian said calmly, opening the brass clasp of the red portfolio. "Before the police arrive to arrest Mr. Sterling for felonious assault, I believe everyone in this room deserves to understand the kind of man standing among us."
Julian pulled out a stack of crisp, watermarked legal documents.
"Clara," Julian said, his eyes softening as he looked over at me. "Do you recognize the name *Apex Urban Core*?"
I froze.
My father’s original, proprietary modular framework. The architectural breakthrough that Arthur had claimed he 'invented' during his first year running Sterling Urban Capital.
"Yes," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "That was my father’s life work."
"Indeed," Julian said, his gaze returning to Arthur with the weight of an executioner's blade. "And Mr. Sterling was foolish enough to believe that deleting digital files from a home computer erased a paper trail that spanned twenty years."
Arthur looked up from the floor, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You can't prove that... the statutes of limitations... the original hard drives were destroyed!"
May you like
"The hard drives were destroyed," Julian agreed smoothly. "But your chief financial officer wasn't."
