Chapter 2 - The Return of the Billionaire

The heavy wrought-iron gates at the end of the courtyard clicked shut with a sharp, resonant snap.

Heavy, purposeful leather footsteps echoed over the white travertine stones, moving at a frantic, accelerating pace.

I wiped a crust of frosting from my eyelashes just in time to see a tall, imposing silhouette emerge from the shadowed archway of the main driveway.

My father, Richard Harrison, strode into the sunlight, his tailored charcoal-gray three-piece suit still crisp from his cross-country flight.

He had landed in Los Angeles three hours ahead of schedule, hoping to surprise his family for the birthday celebration he had promised never to miss.

His dark-brown hair, distinguished by streaks of silver at the temples, framed a face that instantly lost every ounce of warmth as his piercing blue eyes surveyed the scene.

For two agonizing seconds, Richard Harrison stood completely immobile beside the rose arbor.

His gaze swept across the shattered crystal, the spilled platters of fruit, the snickering faces of twenty-five affluent guests, and finally landed upon me.

I looked like a battered, sticky wraith standing in a puddle of dark soda and smeared vanilla cream.

My father’s jaw dropped in sheer, unadulterated disbelief before transforming into a mask of pure, terrifying thunder.

He did not say a word as he broke into a sprint across the manicured lawn, parting the circle of terrified socialites like the Red Sea.

Vanessa was still laughing, her back turned to the courtyard entrance, completely oblivious to the predator closing in behind her.

She reached out with a manicured hand to casually shove the tilted, empty cake board off the edge of the tablecloth.

Before the wood could strike the stone floor, an iron grip intercepted it mid-air and slammed it violently flat against the serving table.

Vanessa gasped, whirling around with an indignant sneer that instantly froze and withered into terror.

“WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER?”

Richard’s roar did not sound human; it echoed against the limestone exterior of the mansion like a physical shockwave.

The sheer volume of his fury sent several guests staggering backward, spilling their champagne onto the lawn.

I lunged forward blindly, grabbing the sleeve of his tailored jacket with my trembling, frosting-covered fingers.

“Dad...” my voice cracked into a pathetic, broken whimper, the adrenaline finally giving way to bone-deep exhaustion.

Richard immediately pivoted toward me, his towering posture softening into an agony of paternal heartbreak that shattered his stoic reputation.

His large, warm hands reached out, completely ignoring the disgusting sludge covering my shoulders, and gently cupped my sticky face.

“Emily... oh God, Emily, look at me, sweetheart,” he breathed, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of tenderness and absolute rage.

His thumbs carefully swiped thick globs of soda-soaked cream away from my red, swollen eyes.

“Who did this to you? Did she do this?”

I could only nod, tears finally carving clean channels through the white paste caked across my cheeks.

Vanessa quickly recovered her composure, tossing her platinum curls over her shoulder and folding her arms across her crimson bodice.

“Richard, please, lower your voice,” she said, her tone dripping with calculated condescension designed to dismiss my agony.

“Do not create an embarrassing scene in front of our most distinguished friends.”

Richard slowly turned his head toward her, his piercing blue eyes narrowing into slits of pure, lethal malice.

“Do not create a scene?” he asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that was infinitely more frightening than his scream.

“You poured garbage over my child's head, Vanessa.”

“She ruined my party!” Vanessa hissed, stepping forward with brazen arrogance, accustomed to manipulating him whenever she pushed boundaries.

“She insulted the catering staff, she spoke down to my guests, and she knocked over the dessert table like an uncivilized brat!”

Richard looked down at the soda bottle discarded near my feet, then back up at Vanessa’s immaculate, pristine dress.

“So your response was to physically assault her in front of twenty-five witnesses?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes dramatically, letting out an airy, dismissive sigh that grated against every nerve in the garden.

“It was a joke, Richard! A harmless, playful birthday prank to teach her a little humility!”

“A joke?” Richard stepped closer, his broad shoulders blocking the sun and casting a massive shadow across her face.

“Look at her trembling! Look at the chemical burns in her eyes from the soda you dumped on her head!”

Vanessa’s aristocratic veneer began to crack, her face turning blotchy with genuine, venomous frustration.

“You always take her side!” she screeched, dropping every ounce of her polished high-society facade.

“You pamper that miserable, spoiled little orphan while treating me like second best in my own home!”

Richard’s fists clenched so tightly at his sides that the seams of his designer jacket strained against his muscular frame.

“She is my daughter, Vanessa, the blood running through my veins, and this is her mother’s home.”

“I am your wife!” Vanessa screamed back, her ego completely unhinged by his public rejection.

In a blind fit of hysterical fury, she reached onto the banquet table and grabbed a massive, heavy silver serving platter.

With all the strength in her slender arms, she swung the metallic edge horizontally toward my father’s face.

The women in the crowd shrieked in horror as the sharp silver sliced through the air.

Richard did not flinch; his executive instincts and military training took over in a split fraction of a second.

He raised his left forearm, catching the blow against his forearm bone with a dull, resonant thrum.

Before Vanessa could pull the weapon back for a second strike, Richard’s right hand clamped onto the rim of the heavy tray like a vise.

He ripped it out of her manicured grip with effortless momentum and hurled it across the patio with a deafening metallic clang.

Vanessa lurched forward off-balance, snarling like a feral beast, and lunged with her polished fingernails aimed straight for his eyes.

Richard extended both palms and shoved her violently backward to neutralize the threat.

Vanessa’s silver stilettos caught on the hem of her long crimson gown, sending her crashing backward into the central banquet table.

The entire wooden structure buckled under the violent impact.

Tiered towers of glass platters tipped over, sending hundreds of chocolate truffles, candied strawberries, and crystal bowls tumbling down.

Porcelain plates shattered against the stone patio in an explosive chorus of sharp ceramic shrapnel.

A dozen vintage crystal champagne flutes struck the ground, spraying foaming golden wine across the ruined hem of Vanessa's dress.

She landed hard on her rear end in the middle of the sticky, wet catastrophe, her platinum hair finally coming undone in wild, straggly clumps.

Richard immediately stepped back in front of me, shielding my trembling body with his broad frame like an immovable shield.

“YOU WILL NEVER TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AGAIN AS LONG AS YOU DRAW BREATH!”

Vanessa sat in the ruined cake and broken glass, panting heavily, her eyes wide with unbridled disbelief and mortification.

For the first time in three years, the undisputed queen of Bel-Air was sitting in the dirt, covered in the wreckage of her own arrogance.

Yet, before she could utter another lying excuse to save her social standing, a calm, steady voice cut through the terrified silence of the terrace.

“Mr. Harrison, do not let her spin another lie.”
