Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Eleanor’s Blood

The silence in the fiftieth-floor boardroom of Harrison Tower was so absolute that I could hear the erratic rhythm of my own racing pulse.

My father remained frozen before the floor-to-ceiling glass, his broad shoulders squared against the glittering expanse of the Los Angeles skyline.

Outside, the distant red and blue lights of the federal transport vehicles dissolved into the neon veins of the freeway below.

Marcus Vance was gone, Judge Lawrence was in chains, and Dr. Sterling had been led away in disgrace, yet the heavy dread in the room had only deepened.

I stared at the rigid line of my father’s back, my fingers still clutching the cool leather edges of my mother’s original trust documents.

“Dad,” I whispered again, stepping closer until my reflection mirrored his in the dark windowpane.

“Who is she?”

My father slowly closed his eyes, inhaling a long, ragged breath that seemed to pull twenty years of buried grief back into his lungs.

When he turned around, the fierce, indomitable billionaire who had commanded boardrooms across three continents looked completely hollowed out.

“Her name is Victoria Ashford,” Richard said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the hairs on my arms stand up.

“She is your mother’s elder half-sister, born from your grandfather’s first marriage in London.”

I shook my head slowly, trying to process the revelation that an entire branch of my family had been erased from my existence.

“My mother never spoke of a sister,” I said, looking to Daniel, whose expression was grim as his fingers flew across his glowing laptop keyboard.

“Eleanor couldn’t speak of her without breaking down, Emily,” my father explained, walking toward the conference table and leaning heavily on both hands.

“Twenty-two years ago, before you were born, the Ashford estate in Surrey was fractured by a bitter inheritance dispute.”

“Your grandfather discovered that Victoria had been systematically siphoning money from the family charities and forging business ledgers.”

“When he rewrote his will to leave the family estate and the controlling shares of the shipping consortium to Eleanor, Victoria went mad with rage.”

“She blamed Eleanor for turning their father against her, claiming your mother was a manipulative thief who stole her birthright.”

Daniel looked up from his screen, turning the monitor toward us as old black-and-white society photographs appeared alongside UK court filings.

A woman with high, sculpted cheekbones, cold obsidian eyes, and striking dark hair glared out from the monitor with a chilling intensity.

The resemblance to my mother was undeniable, but where Eleanor’s face had always radiated gentle warmth, Victoria’s bore the sharp cruelty of a predatory hawk.

“Victoria didn’t just file lawsuits,” Daniel said, his deep voice slicing through the tense air of the boardroom.

“She attempted to have Eleanor declared medically incompetent to annul the will, using the exact same judicial playbook Marcus tried tonight.”

“When that failed, she vanished from Europe with forty million pounds in laundered capital and vowed to erase Eleanor’s line from the earth.”

My throat went dry as the puzzle pieces slammed violently into place.

“Marcus Vance didn't come up with this scheme on his own,” I murmured, my stomach dropping into a bottomless pit.

“Marcus was her inside agent,” Richard growled, his knuckles turning stark white against the dark mahogany table.

“Three years ago, after your mother passed and I was drowning in grief, Vanessa appeared in Monaco at a charity function I sponsored.”

“She knew every detail of my personal grief, every vulnerability I possessed, and every memory of Eleanor I held sacred.”

“I thought it was fate, but it was a calculated infiltration orchestrated from thirty thousand miles away.”

A sharp ping echoed through the high-ceilinged room as Daniel’s encrypted phone vibrated against the desk.

Daniel tapped the screen, and his jaw instantly hardened into stone.

“Mr. Harrison, we have a major breach at the Bel-Air estate,” Daniel stated urgently, jumping to his feet.

“The head of private security just texted me from the gatehouse.”

“Vanessa managed to disable the electronic deadbolt on the north guest wing through the estate’s auxiliary maintenance bypass.”

“She’s inside your private study right now, tearing through the floor safes.”

Richard’s eyes flared with the volcanic wrath that had built his global empire from nothing.

“She is trying to destroy the overseas transfer logs before the federal prosecutors can seize them,” my father snarled.

He didn't wait for another word, turning sharply on his heel and striding toward the private elevator lobby.

“Daniel, notify the perimeter guards to lock down all exterior gates and deploy the guard dogs to the grounds.”

“If a single tire crosses that front threshold before I arrive, every private contractor on duty will spend the rest of their lives in federal prison.”

“Emily, stay behind me,” Richard commanded, grasping my hand in an iron grip as the high-speed elevator doors slid shut.

As the elevator plummeted fifty floors into the earth, my fear transformed into a cold, relentless clarity.

For three agonizing years, Vanessa had treated me like an unwanted ghost in my own mother’s house.

She had smeared cake across my face, poured soda over my dignity, and tried to strip away my sanity before twenty-five mocking socialites.

Now, the masks were torn off, the puppet master was identified, and the woman who had terrorized my youth was trapped like a cornered beast.

We exited the underground garage into the howling midnight air, the black armored Mercedes roaring to life beneath Daniel’s hands.

The tires shrieked against the asphalt as we vaulted up the canyon roads toward Bel-Air, racing against the dying embers of a twenty-year war.
