Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

By 9:00 AM, the financial world had erupted into full-blown pandemonium.

The media frenzy had spilled far beyond the business pages. The combination of a high-society Beverly Hills wedding collapsing within thirty minutes, a disgraced CEO, a viral clip of an enraged mistress being hauled out of a limousine, and a sudden corporate coup orchestrated by an elusive billionaire heiress was irresistible to every news outlet in the Western world.

Outside the gleaming headquarters of Sterling Apex in Century City, hundreds of journalists, camera crews, and financial analysts were gathered behind barricades. Satellite trucks lined Avenue of the Stars.

Up on the forty-second floor, inside the sprawling, glass-walled executive boardroom, I stood before a bank of vanity mirrors. My styling team was making final adjustments to my charcoal-grey double-breasted Saint Laurent suit. My hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant low chignon. The traces of the weeping bride from twelve hours ago were completely eradicated.

Arthur Vance entered the boardroom, followed by two senior federal marshals and Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White-Collar Crime Division.

“The search warrants for the City National safe deposit box have been executed, Clara,” Agent Miller said, nodding respectfully. “Miss Laurent’s information was accurate. We recovered the encrypted hardware wallets, four million in bearer bonds, and the complete, unredacted clinical trial communications from the Bio-Apex subsidiary.”

Agent Miller looked toward the corner of the boardroom, where Julian Sterling sat handcuffed to a heavy conference chair, flanked by two armed federal officers.

Julian had been formally taken into federal custody forty-five minutes ago. He was still wearing his disheveled wedding tuxedo trousers and a cheap gray undershirt provided by building security. His eyes were dull, glassy, completely drained of the fierce arrogance that had once defined him.

“The United States Attorney has signed off on the indictment,” Agent Miller added, his voice firm and professional. “Twelve counts of wire fraud, securities fraud, aggravated money laundering, and second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the clinical trial falsifications.”

Julian didn't even flinch when the word *homicide* was spoken. He had simply ceased to exist as a functioning human being. He was an empty shell waiting for the gates of a federal penitentiary to slam shut behind him.

“Is the press conference ready, Arthur?” I asked, smoothing the lapels of my suit.

“The auditorium downstairs is packed to maximum capacity, Madam Chairwoman,” Arthur replied, a rare, proud smile touching his lips. “Every major network is carrying the feed live.”

I turned and walked over to where Julian sat slumped in the chair.

I stopped right before him. He slowly raised his head, his hazel eyes clouded with defeat, staring up at the woman who had dismantled his entire existence in less than half a day.

“Do you remember what you told me in the limousine last night, Julian?” I asked softly.

Julian’s lips trembled, but he couldn't form a word.

“You told me to stop being dramatic. You told me to make room for her.”

I leaned down slightly, meeting his hollow gaze.

“You wanted room, Julian. Now you have a six-by-eight cell all to yourself. Make all the room you want.”

I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom, the federal agents and Arthur falling into step behind me.

Downstairs, the doors of the main auditorium swung open. The blinding flash of a thousand camera lights illuminated the stage. As I stepped up to the podium, bearing the proud seal of Horizon Holdings, the deafening roar of shouting reporters died into an absolute, expectant silence.

I adjusted the microphone, looked directly into the center camera lens broadcasting to forty million screens across the globe, and began to speak.

“My name is Clara Vance Montgomery. And as the majority shareholder and newly appointed Executive Chairwoman of this company, I am here to announce that the reign of Julian Sterling has officially come to an end.”
