Chapter 4 - Stripped of Armor

The executive salon on the second floor of the Bel-Air estate had been designed for high-stakes warfare. A horseshoe mahogany conference table sat beneath the soft glow of recessed LED lighting, facing an entire wall of high-definition digital monitors.

As I walked into the room, followed by Arthur Vance and the two armed security guards escorting a hollow, pale Julian, the screens lit up one by one.

The faces of seven of the most powerful institutional investors in the world materialized on the display wall. Men and women representing sovereign wealth funds, Tier-1 venture firms, and global investment banks in New York, London, Tokyo, and Frankfurt. They had all been awakened in the middle of their respective nights and mornings by a Tier-One emergency summons.

Julian stumbled into the room, leaning heavily against the back of an ergonomic leather chair. His tuxedo shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes bloodshot and darting erratically.

Chloe had tried to follow us up the spiral staircase, but the security team had unceremoniously detained her in the lower foyer, leaving her sobbing in hysterics as her world collapsed in real time.

“Good evening, members of the board,” I said, taking my seat at the head of the conference table.

On the center monitor, Lord Alistair Croft, representing the European equity consortium, adjusted his spectacles and leaned closer to his camera. “Clara, my dear... or should I say, Madam Chairwoman. Arthur’s dispatch was extraordinary. We were under the impression you were celebrating your nuptials this evening.”

“The nuptials have concluded,” I answered evenly. “And with their conclusion comes a necessary housecleaning. I call this emergency session of the Board of Directors of Sterling Apex to order.”

Julian suddenly lunged toward the central microphone on the table, his voice cracking with desperate hysteria.

“Board members! Listen to me! This is an unauthorized, retaliatory action! Clara Montgomery is using her majority voting trust to settle a personal domestic dispute! I am the Chief Executive Officer! The operational pipeline of Apex is tied directly to my personal leadership! If you remove me, Wall Street will crush the stock at the opening bell! Our market cap will vaporize forty percent by noon!”

A chilling silence greeted Julian’s frantic outburst.

None of the seven board members looked shocked. None of them looked alarmed. In fact, Lord Croft looked down at a briefing paper on his London desk with an expression of profound pity.

“Mr. Sterling,” Lord Croft said, his British accent crisp and unforgiving. “Do you genuinely believe that institutional investors with two hundred billion under management invest in a company based on the charming smile of a mid-level executive?”

Julian blinked, stunned. “I... what?”

Arthur Vance stepped into the camera’s field of view, tapping a single key on a wireless control terminal.

Simultaneously, the main digital display split. On the right appeared the financial forensic summary of the Cayman shell corporation, *Aura Innovations*. On the left appeared a formal criminal referral document already countersigned by the United States Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“The Board has been conducting this audit concurrently with Mrs. Montgomery’s private legal team for the past ninety days, Julian,” Arthur announced, his voice echoing through the high-ceilinged room. “Every wire transfer you authorized to Miss Laurent’s accounts was flagged by our compliance protocols in real time. We permitted the transactions to clear solely to establish a pattern of grand larceny and wire fraud exceeding the statutory federal threshold.”

Julian’s jaw dropped. The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet.

“You... you knew?” he whispered, turning toward me in utter horror. “You knew for three months? You walked down the aisle with me... you let me say those vows... knowing this?”

“I wanted you to sign the prenuptial agreement as an executive in good standing, Julian,” I replied coldly. “Because under Section 9 of that agreement, any pending felony indictments against either party waive all severance packages, all equity vesting, and all claims to intellectual property created during the tenure of employment.”

I looked up at the wall of screens.

“Directors. The motion before the board is the immediate termination of Julian Sterling as Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Apex for cause, the forfeiture of all unvested stock options, and the immediate authorization of civil litigation to freeze and recover all misappropriated assets globally. Do I have a motion?”

“So moved,” Lord Croft stated instantly.

“Seconded,” announced Helena Zhang, head of the Asia-Pacific Growth Fund from Singapore.

“All in favor?” I asked.

Seven hands on the screens went up in unison.

“The motion carries unanimously,” I declared. “Arthur, execute the corporate transition protocol.”

“Wait! NO! YOU CAN'T DO THIS!” Julian screamed, slamming his fists onto the conference table, his saliva flecking the wood. “I created the neural architecture! That IP belongs to me! My patents! My name is on the filings!”

Arthur offered a cold, predatory smile. “Correction, Mr. Sterling. The patent assignments were executed under the standard Vance Trust omnibus inventor agreement when you accepted your initial seed capital four years ago. You were an employee for hire. The IP belongs one hundred percent to Horizon Holdings. You own nothing. You are nothing.”

Julian collapsed back into the chair, clutching his head in his hands, his breath coming in ragged, hyperventilating gasps. The screens began to flicker off as the board members signed off to execute the market orders for the morning press release.

I stood up, smoothing the front of my white gown.

“Arthur,” I said, walking toward the double doors of the salon. “Ensure Mr. Sterling is removed from the property. And inform the private security detail at our Wilshire penthouse that the locks are to be changed before two o’clock tonight.”

“No... Clara!” Julian scrambled across the floor on his hands and knees, reaching desperately for the hem of my gown once more. “Where am I supposed to go?! All my clothes, my watches, my life is in that penthouse!”

I paused at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder.

May you like

“You wanted Chloe to ride with you, Julian,” I said softly. “I suggest you go find a bus.”
