Chapter 6 - The Steel Crayon

By 2:00 AM, Fairfax County Police Headquarters was buzzing with federal agents, military intelligence officers, and local prosecutors.

In Interrogation Room B, Bradley Hayes sat slumped at a metal table, still wearing his pastel polo shirt, now wrinkled, damp, and reeking of sweat. The arrogance that had sustained him during his luxury vacation had completely evaporated. Across from him sat Detective Miller, flanked by Special Agent Ramos.

Through the two-way mirror in the observation booth, Evelyn stood in the shadows. Next to her was District Prosecutor Karen Vance—the officer's sister and one of the most ruthless trial lawyers in Northern Virginia.

"Look at this, Bradley," Detective Miller said, tossing an eight-by-ten glossy photograph onto the table.

It was a picture of Lily’s small, bruised hand clutching the dirty plastic bowl. Beside it was another photo: a drawing found on the living room rug, made with a single broken blue crayon Lily had found behind the sofa. The drawing showed a stick figure of a woman with wings, lying inside a black box, with a little girl standing outside crying.

Across the bottom, in jagged, four-year-old scrawl, were the words: *MOMMY WAKE UP DADDY LOCKED US.*

Bradley looked away, his breath hitching. "I didn't mean for her to be hurt. It was an accident. The timer on the automatic feeder failed."

"Stop lying, Bradley," Miller said calmly. "We have the forensic logs from your smart home system. You accessed the interior cameras forty-two times from your iPad while you were aboard *The Southern Belle*. You saw her trying to open the pantry door on Wednesday afternoon until she collapsed from exhaustion."

"My mother told me not to look!" Bradley suddenly broke down, slamming his palms against the table. "My mother planned everything! She said Evelyn was going to divorce me! Evelyn had already consulted with a military JAG officer about filing for sole custody before she deployed! She was going to cut me off! I had nothing!"

In the observation room, Karen Vance glanced at Evelyn. "Did you consult JAG?"

"Yes," Evelyn whispered. "Six months ago. I found out he had taken out three secret credit cards in my name. I was going to serve him divorce papers the day I returned from deployment."

"So he knew his luxury ride was ending," Karen muttered. "He panicked."

Inside the room, Bradley was sobbing openly now. "My mother said that if we could keep Evelyn’s accounts frozen, we could transfer the trust fund into an offshore annuity. We weren't going to let Lily die! We were going to come back on Sunday! She was supposed to be fine for five days!"

"Five days?!" Miller barked, leaning forward until his face was inches from Bradley’s. "You left a four-year-old alone with no water, no food, and no supervision for FIVE DAYS?!"

"There was water in the dispenser!" Bradley screamed. "The power went out on Wednesday night during the storm! The dispenser shut down! How was I supposed to know the breaker tripped?!"

"You knew because your smart app sent an alert to your phone at 11:14 PM on Wednesday stating: *KITCHEN SUB-PANEL MAIN POWER OFFLINE*," Special Agent Ramos interjected, his voice cold as a tombstone. "You swiped the notification away and ordered another round of Glenfiddich at the marina bar six minutes later."

Bradley froze. The air left his lungs in a wheezing gasp.

"You didn't care if she lived or died, did you?" Miller asked softly. "Because if she died while Evelyn was overseas, and you claimed Evelyn was an unfit mother whose military instability caused the household breakdown, you stood to inherit the entire estate, the house, the military survivor fund, and the trust. You were gambling with your daughter's life to pay off your mother’s debts."

Bradley buried his face in his hands, unable to speak.

The door to the observation room opened quietly. An officer stepped in and whispered to Karen Vance. Karen listened, her eyebrows shooting up, and then looked at Evelyn.

"They just finished questioning Victoria in Room D," Karen said. "She turned on him."
