Chapter 3 - Ambush on the Waves

The salt spray off the coast of Key Largo felt warm against Bradley Hayes’s skin, but he was shivering uncontrollably.

He stood at the stern of *The Southern Belle*, clutching a glass of half-melted Scotch. His hands shook so violently the amber liquid sloshed over the rim, staining the pristine teak deck. Across the open lounge area, his mother, Victoria, was draped in an ivory linen kaftan, wearing oversized designer sunglasses despite the setting sun. His younger sister, Chloe, was twenty-two, sunbathing on the padded loungers, scrolling endlessly on her phone, snapping selfies with the turquoise horizon.

"Bradley, darling, you look like a corpse," Victoria drawled, taking a slow sip from her flute of vintage champagne. "Put down the phone. You've been staring at that wretched screen for an hour. Is the stock market tumbling again?"

"Mother, she's back," Bradley whispered, his voice trembling so much he could barely form the words.

Victoria paused, her champagne glass hovering near her scarlet lips. A subtle, venomous irritation flickered across her Botox-smoothed face. "Who is back?"

"Evelyn. She’s at the house."

Chloe didn't even look up from her phone. "Ugh. I thought the Army kept them in the desert for eighteen months. Her deployment wasn't supposed to end until November. Why does she always have to ruin our vacations?"

"You idiot!" Bradley suddenly roared, slamming his glass against the fiberglass railing. The crystal shattered, sending shards flying across the deck. Chloe screamed, pulling her legs up. Victoria sat bolt upright, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"Lower your voice, Bradley! Have you lost your mind?" Victoria hissed. "The crew will hear you!"

"She found Lily!" Bradley grabbed his hair, pacing in tight, frantic circles. "She had the police with her! They brought bolt cutters, Mom! They cut the lock on the server closet! They have the death certificates! They have the Costa Rica deeds! They have the surveillance feeds!"

Victoria’s face drained of color. The aristocratic composure she wore like armor suddenly cracked, revealing the desperate, calculating predator underneath. She stood up, her kaftan fluttering in the sea breeze.

"Did you leave the external hard drives?" Victoria demanded, her voice dropping into a harsh, frantic whisper. "Bradley! Did you leave the paperwork from the maritime lawyer?"

"You told me nobody would go into that closet!" Bradley shrieked, tears of sheer cowardice spilling down his cheeks. "You said Evelyn’s unit was stationed in an active combat sector in Syria! You said if she went MIA, we could declare abandonment and trigger the DOD death benefits! You said the girl would be fine for three days with the automated food dispensers!"

"Automated dispensers?" Chloe rolled her eyes, scoffing. "Brad, the dog ate all that kibble two weeks ago before we put it in the kennel. Did you seriously leave Lily with dog food?"

Before Bradley could strike his sister, the low, rhythmic thrumming of heavy diesel engines cut through the sea air.

From behind the starboard side of a nearby reef, an eighty-seven-foot Coast Guard cutter, its white hull bearing the bold orange and blue racing stripes, surged into view. At the same time, the roar of twin turboshaft engines echoed from the sky as an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter descended, its spotlight pinning the deck of *The Southern Belle* in blinding, midday-bright illumination.

A voice bellowed through an external loudspeaker, reverberating across the water:

*"VESSEL SOUTHERN BELLE, THIS IS THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD. HEAVE TO AND PREPARE TO BE BOARDED. CUT YOUR ENGINES IMMEDIATELY. REMAIN ON DECK WITH YOUR HANDS VISIBLE."*

Victoria stumbled backward into her wicker chair, her champagne flute slipping from her fingers and shattering on the deck. "No... no, they can't do this. We have maritime rights! Bradley, tell them we’re private citizens!"

May you like

Bradley didn't move. He stood in the blinding wash of the helicopter’s spotlight, his hands slowly rising into the air, staring at the approaching cutter with the hollow, defeated eyes of a man who finally realized his execution had arrived.
