Chapter 5 - Blood on the Marble

The heavy steel fire door at the end of the public hallway shuddered with a deafening *THUD.*

The sound echoed through the condo like the crack of a thunderbolt. They were here.

"Move! Now!" Officer Miller commanded, grabbing Julian roughly by his zip-tied arms and hauling him to his feet. Officer Rivera grabbed Evelyn and Chloe, shoving them toward the kitchen.

Evelyn wailed like a dying animal, her expensive pedicure slipping against the marble tiles. "I can't run! My hip! Julian, do something!"

"Shut up, Mother! Just move!" Julian hissed, stumbling forward, his arrogance entirely replaced by the primal panic of a man who knew the men on the other side of that door had come to collect his debt in flesh and blood.

I lunged for the black duffel bag on the coffee table, slinging the heavy strap over my shoulder. My hand plunged into the front zipper pocket, my fingers desperately searching through loose coins, velvet boxes, and passport sleeves until they closed around the cold, heavy brass of the vintage four-inch skeleton key.

*BANG! BANG!*

Two gunshots punched through the industrial lock of the emergency stairwell door in the outer corridor. The distinct, terrifying sound of heavy boots echoed against the marble walls outside.

"They're through the fire door!" Rivera yelled, drawing her secondary sidearm and handing it directly to Miller. "They’re in the hallway!"

"Kitchen! Now!" I yelled, leading the retreat.

We tore through the open-concept living room, past the marble island, and into the expansive, walk-in pantry lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany cabinetry. I threw aside boxes of imported dry goods, reaching the solid cedar paneling at the far back wall.

I found the hidden seam, pressed my thumb against the recessed wood knot, and popped open a small brass escutcheon plate. I jammed the skeleton key into the keyhole, twisting it hard to the right.

With a heavy, mechanical groan of counterweights and oiled gears, the entire six-foot section of shelving swung inward, revealing a dimly lit, concrete-reinforced corridor that smelled of cold masonry and electrical conduit.

"Go! Go! Go!" Miller urged, pushing Chloe and Evelyn into the darkness first.

Just as Julian stepped toward the threshold of the secret passage, the front double doors of my penthouse exploded inward with a catastrophic splintering of oak.

Two men dressed in tactical black windbreakers, their faces obscured by dark balaclavas, swept into the foyer, semi-automatic handguns raised.

"Chicago Police! Drop the weapons!" Miller bellowed from the kitchen doorway, firing two rapid suppression rounds down the central hall.

The gunfire in the enclosed luxury condo was deafening, the concussive blasts rattling the china cabinets and shattering the pendant glass lights over the island into a rain of crystalline debris. The lead intruder grunted as one of Miller's rounds caught him in the shoulder, spinning him backward against the wall, but his partner immediately returned fire.

A hail of nine-millimeter rounds chewed through the kitchen cabinetry, sending splinters, shattered olive oil bottles, and flour exploding through the air.

"Julian!" the second gunman roared in a thick, guttural Eastern European accent. "Where is the bag?! Where is our money, you dead bastard?!"

Julian lost his mind.

Instead of diving into the reinforced panic passage with us, his cowardice completely consumed him. Terrified that Miller’s gunfire would draw the cartel’s wrath exclusively onto him, Julian violently shoved his own mother out into the exposed kitchen, using her as a human shield as he lunged toward me, trying to rip the duffel bag from my shoulders.

"Give it to me, Elena!" he screamed, his face purple with hysteria. "Give me the bearer bonds! If I give them the bag, they'll let me live!"

"Get off her!" Rivera shouted, leveling her taser at Julian’s back.

The twin prongs fired with a sharp *clack,* burying themselves into Julian's lower spine. Fifty thousand volts of high-voltage electricity ripped through his muscular frame. Julian stiffened instantly like an iron board, his eyes rolling back into his head, a strangled, garbled cry tearing from his throat before he collapsed heavily onto the shattered glass of the pantry floor, convulsing violently.

"Elena, pull the door!" Officer Miller yelled, diving backward through the secret doorway as drywall dust rained down upon us.

I grabbed the heavy iron handle on the inside of the cedar wall. With a surge of adrenaline I didn't know I possessed, I yanked the reinforced steel-backed panel shut.

The heavy deadbolts engaged with a massive, airtight *CLANG.*

A split second later, a volley of bullets slammed into the outside of the door. The sound was like a sledgehammer striking solid armor plating, but the high-grade ballistic steel held firm.

We were sealed inside the emergency maintenance shaft.

In the dim yellow glow of the emergency bulkhead lights, our ragged breathing was the only sound.

Chloe was sitting on the concrete floor, sobbing into her hands, her body shaking uncontrollably. Evelyn was hyperventilating against the wall, clutching her bleeding arm where a flying shard of glass had sliced her skin, staring down at her son who lay twitching and groaning on the floor, incapacitated and utterly broken.

Officer Rivera pressed her back against the steel door, reloading her magazine with practiced, trembling efficiency.

Miller wiped a smear of blood and drywall dust from his forehead, looking at me with a profound, newfound respect. "Ms. Vance... does this service lift lead to the street?"

"No," I breathed, clutching the strap of the duffel bag tightly against my chest. "It leads to the private subterranean garage beneath the building. Directly into the secure vault room where my father parked his vintage collection."

I looked down at Julian, who was slowly beginning to regain consciousness, drool pooling on the concrete beside his cheek.

May you like

"And down there," I whispered, my voice colder than the winter air outside, "we don't wait for your backup. Down there, I have my own private security team."
