Chapter 3 - The Paper Empire

Within ten minutes, the twenty-ninth floor of the Montgomery Tower had transformed into an active crime scene.

Two backup squad cars had arrived at the street level, their flashing blue and red strobes painting the luxury high-rise facades in rhythmic, ominous pulses. The building manager, Mr. Henderson, was now hovering nervously near the elevators, clutching a master keycard and sweating profusely through his three-piece suit as tenants peeked out from their cracked doorways.

In my spacious living room, beneath the Italian crystal chandelier, Julian, Evelyn, Chloe, and the hired locksmith sat lined up along my white sectional sofa, their hands zip-tied securely behind their backs.

Julian’s face was an ash-gray mask of utter defeat. Evelyn was sobbing loudly, her dramatic tears soaking into the silk collar of my robe. Chloe sat curled in on herself, her chin pressed against her chest, weeping silently as Officer Rivera cataloged the contents of the black duffel bag on the glass coffee table.

"One platinum diamond tennis bracelet," Rivera read aloud, her pen scratching against her incident report. "Three certified bearer bond certificates, face value five hundred thousand dollars each. One hard-shell encrypted data drive. Lake Geneva deed portfolio... and this."

Rivera lifted a thick stack of legal parchment bound in a blue legal folder.

My eyes narrowed. "What is that?"

Rivera handed the folder to Officer Miller, who skimmed the first two pages before looking up at Julian with disgust. "It’s a general, durable Power of Attorney form. Along with a quitclaim deed transferring all rights of this condominium, the Lake Geneva property, and the Vance Design Trust to Julian Vance."

"Let me see that," I demanded.

Miller handed me the documents. My eyes scanned the signature line at the bottom.

There, stamped in blue ink, was my name: *Elena Vance.*

Beside it was a notary public stamp, dated yesterday afternoon, bearing the official seal of a certified Illinois notary.

It was a forgery. An astonishingly detailed, meticulously practiced forgery of my handwriting, complete with my distinctive curved 'E' and the sharp, elongated cross of the 't'.

A cold, sickening realization swept over my entire body, freezing the blood in my veins.

Julian hadn't just brought Chloe here to replace me. He hadn't just decided to end our marriage in a fit of greed.

He was legally erasing me.

"Who notarized this?" I whispered, my gaze snapping to Julian like a guillotine.

Julian squeezed his eyes shut, refusing to answer.

"Julian!" I shouted, the fury finally erupting from my throat, violent and uncontrollable. I took two aggressive strides toward the sofa. Officer Miller stepped forward, placing a cautious, restraining hand on my arm.

"Ms. Vance, let us handle it," Miller warned gently.

"Who notarized this forged document, Julian?!" I demanded, leaning down until I was inches from his sniveling face. "You needed me physically present with a government-issued photo ID to legally execute a deed transfer of this magnitude! Who signed off on this?!"

Evelyn suddenly jerked upright on the sofa, her mascara running down her wrinkled cheeks in grotesque black tracks. "Leave him alone! He did what he had to do! You were choking him, Elena! You kept every penny locked away in your father's trust! You treated my son like an employee! He gave you four years of his youth, and you wouldn't even put his name on a single bank account!"

"Because he is a degenerate gambler who burned through two million dollars of his own family inheritance before he even met me!" I yelled back, the truth echoing off the polished walls.

The room went dead silent.

Even Officer Rivera stopped writing.

Chloe’s head snapped up. Her tear-streaked eyes widened in utter disbelief as she looked at Julian. "What? Julian... what is she talking about? You said your family was old money. You said the trust was yours and she was just managing it!"

Julian refused to look at her. He stared fixedly at the Persian rug beneath his feet, his jaw clenching so hard a vein throbbed violently against his temple.

"He lied to you, Chloe," I said, my voice dripping with cold, clinical pity. "Julian hasn't had a penny to his name since 2021. This condo was purchased with my personal inheritance from my father’s estate. His marketing firm is subsidized entirely by my commercial development contracts. The clothes he wears, the watch on his wrist, the car he drives—it is all paid for by Elena Vance. And you... you thought you were climbing into the lap of luxury."

Chloe turned toward Julian, her voice cracking in a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "You told me we were moving to Zurich! You said the money was already transferred! You told me she agreed to an uncontested divorce and gave you the penthouse!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Julian hissed through his teeth, his veneer of charm completely obliterated. "Shut your stupid mouth!"

"Don't you dare speak to her like that!" Officer Rivera snapped, stepping between them. "Mr. Vance, you are officially under arrest for felony domestic battery, grand larceny, breaking and entering, and conspiracy to commit wire and document fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officer read the Miranda warnings, Julian’s eyes slowly lifted. He looked at me, not with remorse, not with shame, but with a terrifying, venomous hatred.

"You think you’ve won, Elena?" he whispered, a twisted, broken smile appearing on his lips. "You think having a few cops in your living room makes you safe? You have no idea what I signed yesterday. You have no idea who is waiting for that duffel bag downstairs."

My stomach dropped like a lead weight.

*Who is waiting for that duffel bag downstairs?*

Before I could demand an answer, Officer Miller’s police radio crackled violently to life on his shoulder, the dispatcher’s frantic voice slicing through the apartment.
