Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Shadows

James did not knock. He turned the heavy brass handle and pushed the front doors open.
The foyer was dead quiet. The soft, classical notes of Chopin were playing faintly from the stereo system in the grand library down the hall.
James walked with measured, unhurried steps across the marble floor. His shoes made no sound against the thick runner rugs. As he reached the double oak doors of the library, he pushed them wide open.
Inside, the room was bathed in the warm light of the stone fireplace.
Brooke was sitting on the velvet chesterfield sofa, an expensive glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in her hand, dressed in a fresh silk robe. Julian Hayes stood by the wet bar in a pristine three-piece charcoal suit, swirling bourbon in a crystal tumbler. Dr. Marcus Vance sat behind James’s antique mahogany desk, casually leafing through confidential medical files.
When the heavy doors swung open, all three of them froze.
Julian was the first to recover. A smooth, predatory smile spread across his aristocratic face as he raised his glass toward James.
"James! You finally came back to your senses," Julian said, his voice dripping with condescending warmth. "We were worried about you, buddy. Running off into the middle of the night with a sick child? That doesn't look good for an equine syndicate CEO."
Brooke took a delicate sip of her wine, her posture relaxing as she saw James standing alone. "Where is the brat, James? Did you leave her at a motel? Because I can assure you, the police are already waiting for my statement regarding your domestic assault on me earlier today."
James walked slowly into the center of the room. He didn't look at Brooke. He didn't look at Julian. His eyes locked directly onto Dr. Marcus Vance, who remained seated behind the desk.
"Thallium sulfate," James said, the two words dropping into the room like unexploded artillery shells.
The room went dead silent. The smirk on Dr. Vance’s face vanished, replaced by an instant, sickening pallor. Julian’s hand holding the glass froze mid-air.
"What did you just say?" Julian asked, his voice tightening.
"Thallium sulfate," James repeated, his tone conversational, chillingly calm. "A lethal, odorless heavy metal. Highly soluble in liquids. Causes acute gastrointestinal distress, progressive peripheral neuropathy, and ultimately cardiac arrest within three to six months. In smaller doses, it mimics autoimmune collapse. Exactly what you wrote on Clara’s death certificate, isn't it, Marcus?"
Dr. Vance swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward Julian. "James... you're hallucinating. You’re under severe psychological duress—"
"Ella is currently in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Louisville Advanced Research Facility," James continued, taking another slow step toward the desk. "Under the personal care of Dr. Aris Thorne. They have already administered Prussian Blue. Her blood panel, gastric wash, and the hair follicles Maria Morales preserved have confirmed the exact chemical signature of thallium."
Brooke gasped, her wine glass slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor. Red wine splattered across the hem of her white silk robe like fresh blood.
"You lie!" Brooke shrieked, jumping to her feet. "Maria wouldn't dare!"
"Maria didn't just give me the hair, Brooke," James said, finally turning his gaze toward her. His eyes were completely void of emotion—black, cold, and merciless. "She gave me Clara’s yellow ribbon."
At the mention of the yellow ribbon, Brooke’s breath caught in her throat. She stumbled backward, clutching her throat as if she were the one suffocating.
"The ribbon?" Julian whispered, his face draining of all color.
"The ribbon Clara stitched before you murdered her," James said. "The ribbon that held the micro-SD card. The video recording from her bedroom, Brooke. Four days before she died. Where you bragged about splitting the eighty-million-dollar trust with Julian."
Julian’s face twisted into an expression of sheer, unadulterated savagery. The polished, charismatic attorney evaporated in an instant.
"You stupid, worthless whore!" Julian roared, lunging toward Brooke and backhanding her across the face with savage force. Brooke shrieked, crashing against the side table, knocking a lamp to the floor. "I told you to find that damn ribbon! I told you she was hiding something in that nursery!"
"She wouldn't let me touch it!" Brooke wailed from the floor, clutching her bleeding lip. "Every time I reached for it, Ella screamed!"
"Shut up!" Julian screamed, breathing heavily. He spun around, reaching smoothly beneath his tailored suit jacket.
A sleek black Glock 19 emerged from Julian’s shoulder holster, its muzzle pointing straight at James’s chest.

"Well, James," Julian said, his chest heaving, his eyes wild with the desperation of a trapped animal. "You always were smarter than I gave you credit for. But you made one fatal mistake. You came back into this house alone."
