Chapter 6 - The Architect of Greed

The drive back to Lexington was shrouded in a heavy, suffocating fog that rolled off the bluegrass pastures like smoke.

James didn't call the police. Calling the local authorities would only alert Julian Hayes and Dr. Vance, who had spent a decade buying judges, state troopers, and city council members with Sterling syndicate money. Instead, James dialed a number he had not used in seven years—the secure line of retired Sergeant Major Frank Miller, his former commanding officer from his days in the Marine Corps reserve, who now operated a tier-one private security intelligence firm in northern Kentucky.

"Miller," the gravelly voice answered on the first ring.

"Frank. It’s James Sterling."

"James. You sound like you’re on a combat frequency."

"I need three armed operators with tactical ECM jammers and high-gain audio intercept equipment at my estate in forty-five minutes. Unmarked vehicles. No local police contact. I have confirmed domestic assassination, conspiracy to murder a minor, and state-level corruption."

There was not a second of hesitation. "My team is moving. We'll stage at the southern tree line by the fifth paddock. What’s the objective?"

"Extraction of evidence, containment of hostile assets, and lethal overwatch if required."

"Understood. Moving out."

James hung up. He reached into the glove compartment, pulled out his biometric gun safe, and pressed his thumb against the scanner. The motorized lid clicked open. Inside rested a customized Kimber .45 ACP pistol, along with three loaded magazines of hollow-point ammunition. He racked the slide, chambering a round, and clicked the manual safety before holstering the weapon beneath his suit jacket.

By the time James reached the outer wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate, the clock read 1:15 AM.

The estate gates were wide open. The usual private guards were absent from the guardhouse. James drove the Range Rover slowly up the half-mile winding driveway lined with centuries-old oak trees.

Parked in the circular driveway in front of the illuminated limestone mansion sat two additional luxury vehicles: a black Mercedes Maybach belonging to Julian Hayes, and a silver Audi sedan registered to Dr. Marcus Vance.

They were all here. The conspirators had gathered to consolidate their cover story and seize control of the estate.

James parked his SUV behind the Maybach, cutting his headlights.

A shadow moved through the rhododendron bushes near the front steps. Frank Miller, dressed in sterile black tactical gear, stepped out of the darkness and tapped on James’s driver-side window.

James rolled it down an inch.

"Thermal imaging shows three hostiles in the main library," Miller reported in a low, clipped whisper. "Two males, one female. Your four estate security guards were relieved thirty minutes ago by Julian’s private contractor team. We neutralized Hayes's guards silently at the perimeter gatehouse. They’re zip-tied in the barn. The library is isolated. We have directional microphones aimed at the windows."

"Are they recording?" James asked.

Miller handed James a lightweight tactical earpiece. "Every breath they take is being beamed to our satellite server and mirrored directly to the Department of Justice’s regional field office in Cincinnati. You walk in there, James, and whatever they say is federal evidence."

James fitted the earpiece into his ear. Immediately, the muffled voices inside the library came through crystal clear, amplified by the parabolic microphone.

*"...the child’s blood panel will show standard pediatric anemia,"* Dr. Vance’s pompous voice was saying. *"With Ella out of the house, James will take her to a clinic. I've already notified the state Department of Child Protective Services that James has exhibited severe paranoia and erratic behavior following his wife’s death. By 8:00 AM, a temporary protective custody order will be issued."*

*"And the hair?"* Julian Hayes’s sharp voice cut in. *"Brooke, you idiot, why did you let Maria Morales keep the sheared hair?!"*

*"Maria won't say a damn word!"* Brooke snapped back defensively. *"She knows Julian can pull her business license with one phone call to the zoning board! Besides, James doesn't know anything. He’s an emotional wreck. He thinks I was just being a strict stepmother. He’ll sign the settlement by morning just to keep Ella out of state foster care."*

*"He’d better,"* Julian muttered, the sound of ice clinking in a bourbon glass clearly audible. *"Because if that trust audit initiates next Thursday, Clara’s forensic accountants will discover the thirty million dollars I’ve siphoned through the equine shell corporations over the last three years. That audit cannot happen. Ella Sterling cannot live to see her ninth birthday."*

James took a slow, deep breath. The venom in his heart cooled into pure, diamond-hard vengeance.

He looked at Miller. "Maintain lethal overwatch through the library terrace windows. If any of them draws a weapon, take the shot."

"Roger that," Miller replied, stepping backward and vanishing instantly into the ink-black shadows of the Kentucky night.

James adjusted his tie, smoothed his suit jacket, and walked up the broad stone steps toward the front doors.
