Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Six months later, the high-ceilinged courtroom of the United States District Court was packed to the gallery with media reporters, former socialite acquaintances, and legal spectators. The trial of *The United States v. Julian Sterling and Victoria Dupont* had become the scandal of the decade—a cautionary tale of boundless greed, familial betrayal, and corporate espionage.
Julian Sterling sat at the defense table, his face hollowed out, forty pounds thinner than he had been on the night he kicked his mother into the storm. He wore an ill-fitting gray suit provided by his public defense team. He kept his eyes glued to the mahogany table, unable to look back at the gallery.
Beside him, Victoria Dupont sat completely motionless, her face a rigid, waxen mask.
Judge Evelyn Bennett sat behind the elevated bench, her reading glasses perched low on her nose as she reviewed the final pre-sentencing reports. The courtroom was dead silent.
"In my thirty years on the federal bench," Judge Bennett began, her voice ringing with stern authority, "I have rarely witnessed a display of familial betrayal as calculated, vicious, and morally bankrupt as the one presented in this docket."
She looked down at Julian.
"Mr. Sterling, you were blessed with every advantage a human being could ask for. An honorable family, immense educational opportunities, and a mother whose generosity borders on legendary. Yet, driven by an unearned sense of entitlement and manipulated by your own shallow vanity, you turned upon the woman who gave you life."
Julian closed his eyes, a single tear cutting through the dust on his cheek.
"You did not merely attempt to steal her home," Judge Bennett continued. "You physically assaulted an elderly woman in the middle of the night, conspired with a federal convict, and authorized the theft of millions of dollars earmarked for pediatric medical treatment. You acted with malice, arrogance, and an utter absence of basic human decency."
The Judge picked up her gavel.
"On Count One, Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud: fifteen years. On Count Two, Aggravated Bank Fraud: ten years, to run concurrently. On Count Three, Grand Larceny: seven years, to run consecutively. You will serve a total of twenty-two years in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with no possibility of parole."
Julian let out a broken, animalistic whimper, his head sinking onto the defense table.
Judge Bennett turned her icy gaze to Victoria Dupont.
"As for you, Victoria Dupont. You are a career predator. You entered this family with the sole intention of strip-mining an honorable woman’s life work to settle your own gambling debts and offshore liabilities. You corrupted your own daughter, destroyed your son-in-law, and displayed not a single ounce of remorse throughout these proceedings."
The Judge’s voice dropped like an executioner’s axe.
"On all counts, you are sentenced to thirty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama. Furthermore, the court orders full restitution in the amount of twenty-four million, eight hundred thousand dollars."
BANG!
The gavel struck the sounding block with the sound of a closing crypt.
Two marshals immediately stepped behind Julian, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place. Across the aisle, two female marshals did the same to Victoria.
As Julian was led toward the holding cell door, he desperately lifted his head to look at the gallery one last time. Sitting in the very last row, surrounded by federal marshals and flanked by Arthur Vance, sat Eleanor.
She was dressed in ivory white. Her posture was straight, her chin held high, her eyes clear and unclouded.
"Mom!" Julian cried out as the bailiff pushed him forward. "Mom!"
May you like
Eleanor did not blink. She did not raise a hand. She simply watched him disappear behind the heavy steel door, closing the ledger on forty-one years of blind maternal devotion.
