Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Gala

By noon, the clouds had parted, replaced by a blinding, crisp autumnal sun that illuminated the sprawling emerald lawns of Sterling Manor. The long, circular driveway was lined with black luxury sedans, Maseratis, and Bentleys. A string quartet played Vivaldi by the infinity pool, while white-jacketed waiters carried silver trays of vintage Dom Pérignon and caviar canapés among two hundred of the state’s political and financial elite.
Senator Hastings stood near the marble fountain, laughing heartily as he conversed with Julian’s country club peers. Julian stood beside him, clutching a glass of straight bourbon. His face was pale as chalk, hidden beneath a thin layer of bronzer his wife’s makeup artist had frantically applied to conceal his terror. Every time a car door slammed in the driveway, Julian’s entire body twitched.
Across the lawn, Victoria was desperately trying to play the grand dame. Dressed in a bespoke blush-pink Valentino suit, she smiled, kissed cheeks, and accepted congratulations on little Leo’s birthday. But her eyes were manic, constantly darting toward the perimeter gates, where four unmarked black Suburbans had been parked silently for the past forty-five minutes.
Chloe stood near the champagne tower, clutching her designer handbag tightly against her ribs. Her passport, three hundred thousand dollars in cash, and bearer bonds were packed inside the trunk of her Mercedes parked in the rear service alley. She was just waiting for the speeches to begin to make her exit.
Suddenly, the music stopped.
The string quartet lowered their bows as Arthur Vance stepped onto the raised stone pavilion overlooking the lawn. Behind him, flanked by two imposing men in tailored dark suits with federal lapel pins, walked Eleanor Vance.
A collective murmur rippled through the high-society crowd.
"Look, it's Eleanor!" someone whispered near the bar. "I thought they said she was bedridden in a private clinic in Zurich?"
Julian’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the flagstones. The bourbon soaked into his bespoke leather shoes. "Mom... don't," he muttered under his breath, paralyzed.
Eleanor stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone with effortless grace. She looked out over the crowd of friends, colleagues, and parasites who had spent years feeding at her trough.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor’s voice projected across the manicured grounds, clear, powerful, and utterly devoid of hesitation. "Welcome to Sterling Manor. We are gathered here today to celebrate my grandson Leo’s seventh birthday. A boy who represents the future of the Vance name."
Victoria immediately pushed through the crowd, waving her hands, her voice tight with panic. "Eleanor, darling! That’s enough! Let’s let the children cut the cake! Everyone, toward the tent!"
"Quiet, Victoria," Eleanor commanded, not even looking at her. Her voice carried the weight of an iron gavel. Victoria froze in the center of the lawn, fifty pairs of elite eyes turning to look at her in confusion.
"For forty years," Eleanor continued, "I built an enterprise based on integrity, honor, and accountability. But rot does not always come from competitors. Most often, it festers within the walls of one's own home."
The two federal agents behind Arthur began walking down the stone steps toward the lawn.
"Twenty-four hours ago," Eleanor announced, her gaze locking directly onto Julian, "a fraudulent attempt was made to steal this estate, strip my philanthropic foundations, and launder millions of dollars stolen from terminally ill children through shell corporations run by convicted federal felons."
Gasps erupted across the lawn. Senator Hastings took an involuntary step back from Julian, as if the younger man had suddenly caught fire.
"Mom, stop it!" Julian shrieked, breaking his paralysis, running toward the pavilion. "Stop! You're ruining everything!"
"You ruined yourself, Julian," Eleanor said into the microphone.
At that exact moment, the screech of heavy tires tore through the garden ambiance. Three more black vehicles raced up the main drive, cutting across the immaculate lawn, tearing deep ruts into the grass, and boxed in Chloe’s Mercedes near the garage.
Eight armed federal agents in tactical vests bearing the letters **FBI** poured out of the vehicles.
"Julian Sterling! Victoria Dupont! Chloe Dupont-Sterling!" Arthur Vance’s voice boomed over the speakers, reading from a pristine court order. "By order of the United States District Court, all assets associated with the Vance-Sterling Trust have been frozen. Federal arrest warrants have been issued for bank fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."
The crowd exploded into chaos. High-society women screamed, men in three-piece suits scrambled out of the way, and the caterers abandoned their trays as federal agents fanned out across the grounds.
Victoria turned on her heel and sprinted toward the hedge maze leading to the service road, her high heels sinking into the mud, her pink designer jacket tearing against the thorns.
"Federal agents! Do not move!" a voice bellowed through a megaphone.

Eleanor stood motionless at the podium, watching the empire of illusions burn to the ground.
