Chapter 9 - The Crown Passed

Alexander opened his eyes, wiping away his tears with the back of his hand.

He reached out and gently took Emily’s small, trembling hands into his own.

“Emily,” Alexander said, his voice resonant, powerful, and filled with an unbreakable vow. “Look at me.”

Emily looked up through her tear-blurred vision.

“Lily’s surgery will not happen next month at Northwestern Memorial,” Alexander stated calmly.

Emily’s heart stopped. She gasped, panic instantly seizing her chest. “What? No! Mr. Sterling, please, that’s her only chance—”

“Listen to me,” Alexander interrupted gently, a soft, reassuring smile touching his lips. “Tomorrow morning at seven o’clock, a private medical transport will arrive at your apartment. You and Lily will be flown directly to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Specialty Wing in Baltimore. The world’s leading pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Harrison Vance, is on my personal medical foundation board. He will perform Lily’s surgery personally.”

Emily froze. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“The entire procedure, the post-operative rehabilitation, her physical therapy, and her education through university will be paid for in full by the Sterling Family Trust,” Alexander continued, his eyes shining with absolute certainty. “You will never pay another hospital bill for as long as you live. That is my personal promise to you.”

Emily began to sob uncontrollably. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with the release of three years of unbearable terror, sleepless nights, and bone-crushing despair.

“Why... why are you doing this for me?” she wept into her palms. “I don’t deserve this... I’m just a waitress...”

“You are not just a waitress, Emily,” Alexander said softly. “You are the kind of person this broken world desperately needs more of.”

Alexander turned his head toward Arthur, who had been standing silently nearby, watching his older brother with profound respect.

“Arthur.”

“Yes, Chairman?”

“Prepare the transfer paperwork for *Le Miroir*.”

Arthur blinked, surprised for the first time that evening. “The transfer, sir? To which holding entity?”

Alexander looked back at Emily.

“Transfer forty-nine percent of the restaurant’s operational equity and the title of Managing Director to Emily Watson. She will take over as General Manager effective immediately following Lily’s recovery.”

Emily gasped, lifting her head in utter shock. “Me? General Manager? Mr. Sterling, no! I don't know how to run a luxury restaurant! I’m only twenty-five! I don’t have a business degree!”

“A business degree teaches you how to count money, Emily,” Alexander replied with a quiet smile. “It does not teach you how to treat human beings with respect. Rachel Vance had two master's degrees, and she was an incompetent, vicious monster. You have a heart of pure gold. My executives will teach you the logistics. But your heart... your heart will teach this restaurant how to have a soul.”

Alexander reached out and closed Emily’s fingers over her envelope of $2,118.

“Keep this money, Emily,” Alexander whispered. “Take it home. And whenever you look at it, remember the night you proved that kindness is the greatest wealth on this earth.”
