Chapter 10 - Queen of the Tides

The evening breeze over the private terrace of the Hartwell estate in Newport, Rhode Island, smelled of clean sea salt and wild beach roses.

Evelyn walked down the stone stairs that led directly to the private pier where her father’s vintage wooden sailboat, *The Wanderer*, bobbed gently on the incoming tide. The sun was setting in a blaze of crimson and molten gold, painting the waters of the Atlantic in fire.

She reached the end of the wooden dock, where the water was deep and clear.

From her pocket, she pulled a small velvet box. She opened it.

Resting inside was not her wedding ring—that had been melted down months ago, the gold sold to fund a scholarship for young female maritime engineers. Inside the box was the small, tarnished brass compass her father had given her on her tenth birthday, engraved with eight simple words:

*“The wind does not command you. You command the sail.”*

Evelyn smiled. The grief that had weighed down her chest for five years had finally transformed into pure, unyielding strength.

She had survived the gilded cage. She had destroyed the vipers who murdered her family. She had stripped the arrogance from the man who called her useless, and she had built an empire with her own bare hands.

She looked out toward the open horizon, where the great ocean liners were moving outward into the gathering dark, their navigation lights glowing like floating stars against the deep blue sea.

She was no longer a victim.

She was no longer an ornament.

She was Evelyn Hartwell, Master of the Docks, Queen of the Tides, and the captain of her own destiny.

And as the night fell over the Atlantic, she turned back toward her home, knowing that no one in this world would ever dare to call her useless again.
