Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The brass knob turned with a slow, agonizing creak.

Emily squeezed her eyes shut, every muscle in her body coiling like a steel spring. She gripped a heavy bronze candlestick she had snatched from the low hallway console table while crawling, holding it against her chest. If he opened that door, she would strike for his throat with everything she had left.

*Brrrrring! Brrrrring!*

The sudden, piercing ring of a cellphone tore through the hallway.

Ryan froze. His hand paused on the closet knob, just an inch from yanking it open. He cursed violently under his breath, let go of the handle, and yanked his phone from his pocket.

“What?!” he snapped into the receiver, turning his back to the closet.

The voice on the other end was tinny and frantic, but Emily recognized the cadence immediately—it was Victoria Sterling.

“Ryan, where the hell are you?” Victoria hissed over the line. “The compliance officer from the insurance syndicate just called my burner. Vance flagged the policy application with the state attorney general’s office! They’re freezing the trust accounts in forty-eight hours!”

Ryan ran a hand over his buzzed hair, his knuckles white. “That’s impossible. Vance doesn't have the primary signatures.”

“He doesn't need them! He pulled the DOT camera footage from Route 9! They know your Escalade was at Junction 14!” Victoria was screaming now, her polished southern accent completely unraveling into raw panic. “If Emily talks to the investigators, we are looking at attempted murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny. It’s over, Ryan! Pack the offshore bonds and meet me at the private airstrip in Gallatin. We have to leave the country *tonight*.”

Ryan stood completely motionless in the hallway. When he spoke, his voice was terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion.

“We’re not leaving without the five million,” he said quietly.

“Did you hear what I just said?! The feds are moving!”

“They don't have a case if there’s no victim to testify,” Ryan said, his tone chillingly matter-of-fact. “The catastrophic injury rider pays out automatically to the designated secondary trust in the event of accidental death. Emily is already unstable. She’s depressed. Everyone knows she’s been struggling with suicidal ideation since the crash. Her therapist noted it. Marcus noted her erratic behavior today.”

Inside the closet, Emily felt the blood drain from her face.

“What are you going to do?” Victoria asked, her voice dropping into a breathless hush.

“She’s going to have a tragic fall down the stairs,” Ryan whispered, staring directly at the wooden steps leading to the foyer. “A fatal cervical fracture. Consistent with an unsupervised paraplegic attempting to use the stairs during a panic attack. The police won't question it. I’ll meet you in Gallatin by 2:00 AM. Get the plane ready.”

He hung up the phone.

The silence that returned to the second floor was absolute. Ryan didn't rush. He didn't scream anymore. He was a professional moving methodically through a checklist.

He turned back toward the linen closet.

“I know you’re in there, Emily,” he said softly, his voice sickeningly gentle. “I saw the carpet fibers dragged across the floor. You always were stubborn. Just like your father.”

He gripped the door handle and ripped it open.

Light flooded the small space. Ryan stood framed in the doorway, a cruel, mocking smile playing on his lips. He looked down at her curled between the blankets.

“Time for your final therapy session, sweetheart,” he said, reaching down with both hands to grab her by her fleece jacket.

Emily didn't hesitate.

With a roar that tore from the deepest, most feral part of her soul, she swung the heavy bronze candlestick with all the power in her torso.

The solid metal base struck Ryan squarely across the cheekbone with a sickening *CRACK*.
