Chapter 7 - The Shadow Partner

The interrogation room at the central precinct smelled of industrial bleach and sweat.
Vanessa sat at the metal table. Her cream silk blouse was rumpled, her makeup smeared, but the frantic, hysterical facade she had put on for the patrol officers was completely gone. In its place was a chilling, arrogant composure.
Sitting beside her was Julian Sterling.
Mark’s best friend. Mark’s chief financial officer at Vance Logistics. The man who had given the eulogy at Clara’s funeral, crying tears that had seemed so genuine Mark had embraced him like a brother.
Julian was dressed in a three-thousand-dollar charcoal suit, his silver cufflinks gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights. He tapped a gold fountain pen against a legal brief.
"This interview is a gross violation of my client’s constitutional rights, Detective," Julian said smoothly as Sarah Vance entered the room and slammed the door behind her. "You have held Mrs. Vance for five hours without formal arraignment. You obtained the hard drives from the residence without a specific electronic search warrant—your initial entry was strictly for a domestic disturbance."
"Shut up, Julian," Vance said flatly, pulling out a metal chair and scraping it loudly across the floor before sitting down.
"I am her legal representative and corporate power of attorney," Julian countered, smiling thinly. "You have no physical evidence connecting my client to the unfortunate drowning of Clara Vance. A blurry, low-resolution audio recording from an unverified home server will be thrown out in preliminary hearings. The chain of custody is completely compromised."
Vanessa leaned forward, resting her chin on her clasped hands. A faint, mocking smirk played at the corners of her lips.
"You think you’re so smart, Detective," Vanessa whispered, her voice silky and venomous. "You think you’ve caught the big bad wolf. But you don't know how the world works. Mark is a weak, pathetic coward. He couldn't even stand up to his own mother. He sat there and watched me discipline that little monster because deep down, he hated those kids. They reminded him of Clara. They reminded him of his own failures."
"Is that why you put Digoxin in an infant's apple juice, Vanessa?" Vance asked, leaning across the table until their faces were inches apart. "Because Mark hated them?"
Vanessa’s smirk didn't waver. "You can't prove that was me. Maybe Mark put it there. After all... his fingerprints are all over that kitchen. He’s the one with the prescription history for sedatives, isn't he? We have medical records showing his severe depression."
Julian cleared his throat, sliding a document across the table. "We have already filed an emergency petition for bail. A judge has signed off on a supervised release pending a formal suppression hearing. My car is waiting outside."
Detective Vance looked at the document. Then she looked up at Julian.
Slowly, deliberately, Vance began to laugh.
It wasn't a nervous laugh. It was the low, dangerous rumble of a hunter who had just watched two wolves walk directly into a steel bear trap.
"You really think you’re getting out of here tonight, Julian?" Vance asked softly.
Julian frowned, his arrogant demeanor flickering for a fraction of a second. "The law is the law, Detective. You cannot hold her on an illegal—"
"I’m not holding her on the video from the kitchen, Julian," Vance said, reaching into her jacket pocket and pulling out a small, clear plastic evidence bag.
Inside the bag was a high-capacity encrypted USB drive with a distinctive corporate logo stamped on the metal casing: *Sterling & Vance Financial Holdings.*
Julian’s face drained of color so fast it looked like someone had opened a valve in his neck.
"Where... where did you get that?" Julian stammered.
"Ten minutes ago, our federal task force raided your downtown penthouse," Vance said, her voice dropping into a lethal, triumphant cadence. "You see, Julian, you were smart enough to set up an offshore shell corporation in Panama to receive the laundered trust funds. But you were stupid enough to keep the secondary private decryption keys in a safe behind the oil painting of yourself in your study."
She dropped the drive onto the metal table with a heavy, metallic *thud*.
"We didn't just find the trust fund embezzlement," Vance whispered. "We found the wire transfers from your personal account to the chemical supplier in Belarus who shipped the liquid Zolpidem and the Flunitrazepam. We found the text messages between you and Vanessa detailing the exact timing of Clara’s murder. And most importantly..."
Vance leaned in closer to Vanessa, whose smug smirk was now disintegrating into pure, wide-eyed terror.
"...we found the life insurance policies you two took out on Lily and Leo. Two million dollars each. Payable exclusively to the corporate entity managed by Julian Sterling."
The door to the interrogation room burst open. Four armed federal marshals stepped inside, their tactical rifles slung across their chests, handcuffs gleaming at their waists.
"Julian Sterling, Vanessa Vance," Vance announced, standing up and towering over them. "You are both under arrest for Federal Wire Fraud, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder, First-Degree Murder, and Attempted Aggravated Child Homicide. In this state, those are all death penalty offenses. Take them away."
May you like
As the marshals wrenched Julian’s arms behind his back and slammed him against the table, Vanessa began to scream—a shrill, undignified shriek of pure panic as the reality of the needle and the execution chamber finally crashed down upon her.
