Chapter 5 - The Monster Unmasked

The silence in the precinct lab was absolute.
It was a suffocating, violent silence that felt heavy enough to crush bone.
Mark stood paralyzed, his eyes locked onto the black screen where the video had just paused on Vanessa’s smiling face. His brain felt like it was tearing itself apart at the seams.
Clara hadn't drowned because of an asthma attack.
She hadn't slipped on wet patio stones in the middle of the night.
She had been murdered. Systematically poisoned, suffocated, and thrown into ten feet of water while he—her husband, her protector—lay unconscious in their bed fifty feet away, drugged into oblivion by the woman he would marry four months later.
"Oh, God..." Mark’s knees gave out completely. He hit the concrete floor of the lab, his forehead slamming against the linoleum. "Oh, God, Clara... Clara, I’m sorry... I’m so sorry..."
Margaret didn't comfort him. She stood over him, her face white with shock, her hands trembling as she clutched her crucifix necklace. "She killed her," Margaret whispered, horror cracking her voice. "She killed my daughter-in-law in cold blood. And then she moved into her bed."
Detective Vance was already reaching for her radio, her voice cutting through Mark’s hysterical sobbing like a scalpel.
"All units, this is Detective Vance. Upgrade the hold on Vanessa Vance at the county holding facility. Cancel the domestic battery booking. Prepare a warrant for Murder in the First Degree, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Attempted Murder by Poisoning. Lock down her cell. No phone calls. No visitors. Full suicide watch."
"Wait," the forensic tech said, his hand raised. "Detective... you need to see the rest of this."
Vance stopped. "There’s more?"
"The footage from today," the tech said, clicking open a modern directory dated that very afternoon. "From the hidden camera in Lily’s room. Just three hours before the grandmother arrived."
The screen shifted. Lily’s small bedroom appeared.
Lily was sitting on the floor, attempting to stack wooden alphabet blocks. Baby Leo was asleep in his crib in the corner.
Vanessa walked into the frame. She wasn't carrying a weapon. She was carrying a plastic measuring syringe and a small glass vial.
She walked over to Leo’s crib.
Lily looked up, her eyes wide with terror. *"Vanessa... is Leo sick again?"*
Vanessa didn't look at the little girl. She uncapped the syringe, measuring out two milliliters of a milky white solution, and squirted it directly into the baby’s half-empty bottle of apple juice sitting on the changing table.
*"He’s fine, Lily,"* Vanessa said smoothly. *"He just needs to sleep. The louder he cries when your father is awake, the more annoyed your father gets with both of you. You don't want Daddy to send you away to an orphanage, do you?"*
*"No..."* Lily whimpered, hugging her knees to her chest.
*"Then when he wakes up, you make sure he finishes this juice. Every drop. And if you tell Daddy that I put medicine in it..."* Vanessa turned her head, fixing the four-year-old with a dead, predatory stare. *"I will take that stuffed rabbit your dead mother gave you, and I will burn it in the fireplace. And then I’ll lock you in the dark crawlspace under the stairs for three days. Do you understand me?"*
Lily began to cry silently, her tiny hands clamping over her mouth to stifle the sound. *"I promise... I won't tell... I’ll be good..."*
In the precinct lab, Mark let out a scream that didn't sound human. It was the sound of a man whose soul had been completely incinerated from the inside out. He scrambled up from the floor, lunging toward the door with animalistic fury.
"I’LL KILL HER!" Mark shrieked, his eyes bloodshot, veins bulging along his neck. "I’LL RIP HER THROAT OUT! LET ME GO! LET ME AT HER!"
Deputy Miller and another uniformed officer tackled Mark to the floor, wrestling his arms behind his back as he thrashed like a madman, his screams echoing down the subterranean hallways of the police station.

"Sedate him!" Vance ordered, her face grim. "Get the paramedics down here and get him to the psych ward before he tears his own heart out. Miller, with me. We need to find out who 'Julian' is, and we need to find him *now*."
