Chapter 9 - The Cornered Vipers

The click of four federal agents unholstering their tasers snapped Bianca out of her paralysis.
She wasn't going to spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison. She had clawed her way out of the gutter, spent a decade perfecting the art of seduction and murder, and she refused to die in an orange jumpsuit.
With a wild, feral scream, Bianca lunged forward.
She didn't run for the doors—she knew they were blocked by federal tactical units. Instead, she grabbed a heavy, solid-brass executive pen-holder from the conference table, whipped around, and drove the jagged metal edge straight toward Chloe’s throat!
“If I’m going down, your bloodline ends today, Julian!” Bianca shrieked.
The room erupted into chaos. Board members screamed, ducking under the glass table. Evelyn gasped, throwing her frail body across Chloe’s lap to shield her granddaughter.
Julian moved with the supernatural speed born of a father’s primal instinct.
He didn't care about his burned hands. He didn't care about the agony that flared through his charred palms. Julian threw his entire 200-pound frame between Bianca and his daughter.
The brass point slammed viciously into Julian’s left shoulder, tearing through his bespoke suit jacket and burying itself deep into his muscle. Julian grunted, the impact driving him down to one knee, but he didn't falter.
With his right, heavily bandaged fist, Julian delivered a devastating, upward hammer-fist straight into Bianca’s jaw.
CRACK!
The sheer force of the blow lifted Bianca clean off her feet. She crashed backward onto the glass conference table, shattering a crystal pitcher of ice water, before sliding limply down to the floor, her eyes rolled back into her head, completely unconscious.
“DOWN! DON'T MOVE!” Marcus Vance roared, his service weapon drawn, pinning Marcus Drake’s face down against the glass table with one massive forearm.
Drake offered no resistance. He lay there, his three-thousand-dollar suit soaked in ice water, his eyes wide and vacant as the reality of multiple life sentences in ADX Florence settled over his soul. Steel cuffs snapped around his wrists with brutal finality.
Julian knelt on the carpet, breathing heavily, blood seeping through the dark fabric of his shoulder.
“Daddy!” Chloe cried, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest. “Daddy, you’re bleeding!”
Julian wrapped his arms around his daughter, ignoring the blinding pain in his shoulder and hands. He held her tight, pressing his cheek against her soft hair, feeling the steady, frantic beat of her little heart.
“I’m okay, baby,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he had kept locked away for three agonizing years. “I’m okay. It’s over. The monsters are gone.”
Evelyn Vance reached out from her wheelchair, her trembling, scarred hand resting gently on Julian’s bowed head. Tears streamed silently down her wrinkled cheeks.
“You protected us, Julian,” Evelyn murmured softly. “Your father and Clara… they can finally rest now.”
Julian looked up. Across the boardroom, federal agents were dragging the limp, handcuffed form of Bianca Rossi out into the corridor. Marcus Drake was hauled to his feet, his head forced down as cameras from the newly arrived press corps flashed wildly through the glass doors.
Camille, Bianca, and Drake had built a web of deceit, poison, and murder that had nearly destroyed an empire. They had relied on Julian’s blind rage; they had counted on his grief making him reckless. But in the end, it was not Julian’s rage that had dismantled them.
